Elizabeth J. (Betty) McKinney, 74, of East Hampton, beloved wife of James C. McKinney passed away Wednesday morning, September 25th at Chestelm Health and Rehab in Moodus. Born Feb. 19, 1950 in Middletown, CT, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Bertha (Fosa) Wolfe. Betty worked as a buyer for several department stores before starting her own craft shop in South Glastonbury. She worked at Chestelm for a period before her illness, the place that welcomed her into their care. She had served as the President of the Women's Auxiliary of the East Hampton Volunteer Fire Department, and was a past member of the East Hampton Sports Booster Club. Betty's passions included her family, crafting, and camping trips to many destinations. She was especially fond of their trips to Myrtle Beach, where she and Jim took each grandchild individually to share the experience. Besides her husband of 56 years James, she is survived by her son James A. McKinney and wife Deb of East Hampton, her daughter Danielle Owen and husband Scott of East Hampton, her brother Ray Nichols and wife Ann of East Hampton, her sister Lynn Nichols of East Hampton. She was a loving Meme to her 4 grandchildren and their partners Erin McKinney (Rob Severin), William Owen and wife Melissa, Matt McKinney (Maddy Starr), Ryan Owen and wife Miranda, her great grandson James Owen and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers Skip and Tommy Nichols. Her family would like to extend their sincere thanks for the care provided by Chestelm and the Middlessex Hospice staff. Per Betty's wishes, there will be no formal services. All are welcome to a simple gathering to share stories and celebrate Betty's life on October 19th from 3-6pm at Nelson's Campground in East Hampton CT. Those wishing to honor her memory are asked to donate to the East Hampton Volunteer Fire Department, 3 Barton Hill Road, East Hampton CT 06424.
