Elizabeth "Liz" Sweo, age 76, of Olmsted Township, Ohio, passed away on October 28, 2025. Born on October 18, 1949, to the late Thomas and Margaret Mangan, Liz lived a life marked by devotion to family, community, and joyful tradition.
In 1971, Liz married the love of her life, John Edwin Sweo, with whom she shared nearly five decades of marriage until his passing in 2019. Together, they had two children: Tom (Kira) Sweo and the late Mary Patricia. Liz was the second of five sisters. She is survived by her beloved older sister Kitti (Michael) Drops and was preceded in death by her sisters Patricia (Joseph) Graham, Margaret Mangan, and Marita (Michael) Krupar. She was a cherished aunt to many nieces and nephews, all of whom held a special place in her heart.
A lifelong Cleveland Guardians fan, Liz's passion for baseball was more than just a pastime, it was a family affair. She attended countless games with loved ones and proudly worked for the team during a dominant run in the late 1990s. Beyond her love of Cleveland sports, Liz was also committed to building her community through acts of service. Through Tom's years in the Boy Scouts, Liz found herself involved with the Greater Cleveland Council (now Lake Erie Council), she served as a commissioner for several packs and troops in the area helping support leaders provide for children in the program. This involvement with the scouts led to Liz and her family dedicating many weekends volunteering at Beaumont Scout Reservation, where the weather might cooperate.
Liz found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Her annual trips to an apple orchard in Ashtabula, Ohio, with her family were a cherished almost yearly tradition. These trips were often filled with warm cups of cider, fresh baked goods, and memories of helping press the cider when the orchard was smaller. A lifelong reader, Liz could be seen frequenting the mystery section of the local libraries, reading almost everything under the new releases in the section. In retirement, she embraced her love of bingo and became an active member of the North Olmsted Senior Center. There, she formed deep friendships with the staff and her fellow seniors. This also allowed Liz to continue her dedication to service by volunteering for the center where she could, often checking her friends in for activities and chatting with them as she did so.
Liz will be remembered for her warmth, her unwavering dedication to those she loved, and her spirited enthusiasm for life. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew her.
A memorial service will be held at St. Mary of the Falls Church, 25615 Bagley Rd, Olmsted Falls, OH 44138 on Wednesday, November 19, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. with burial to follow at Sunset Memorial Park, North Olmsted, Ohio.
