Of Lewiston, NY, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 13, 2024, at Northgate Health Care Facility. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother. She was born in Niagara Falls, NY, on December 28, 1941, the daughter of the late Edward and Catherine [Walasek] Apen, Sr.
She was the Valedictorian of her Stella Niagara class and graduated from Niagara University and Niagara County Community College with her Registered Nurse degree.
Elizabeth was employed at Memorial Medical Center for 15 years.
She will be remembered as a kind, selfless, gentle soul, always put other people's needs before her own. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and made routine drives to Rochester to see them perform in their music recitals.
Elizabeth enjoyed cooking Polish and Italian dishes for family and friends. Her pumpkin pie and polish pierogies were her specialties.
Sports were a big part of Liz's recreation time, having married a Buffalo Bills fanatic and had attended three Super Bowls. She watched and attended countless football, basketball and hockey games. She was a good sport through it all.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years Gene J. Virtuoso, her children Maria (Robert) Nalecz and Michael Virtuoso, four grandchildren, Andrew, Rachel, Kristen and Olivia, a sister in law Monique Apen, also many nieces and nephews.
Elizabeth was the mother of the late Stephen Virtuoso and sister of the late Dr. Edward Apen, Jr.
Her family will be present on Wednesday from 8:30-9:30 AM at the RHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 901 Cayuga Street, LEWISTON, NY, where funeral services will be held at 9:30 AM, followed by her Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. Peter's Church, 620 Center Street, Lewiston, NY,
with the Rev. Luke Uebler officiating.
Flowers are gratefully declined. Memorials may be made in her name to the Niagara County SPCA.
Entombment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston, NY.
