Ella Mimms Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by L.C. May Funeral Services, Inc. on Aug. 24, 2023.
Ella Bell Mimms
It came to pass that on December 25, 1928, God showed favor to Kit and Bessie George and honored them with the birth of their second born child Ella Belle George. A gift from the very beginning on Christmas Day, Ella was born in Pike Road, Alabama. They would reside in Mount Meigs, AL for the majority of her upbringing.
She passed away peacefully and gracefully on Aug. 17, 2023, in the privacy of the family home surrounded by her loved ones. She is survived by her children, Margaret Mallet (Anderson, IN), Linda Mimms Byrd (Indpls, IN), Dennis Mimms (Kellie Jo) (Shelbyville, IN), Konnie Mimms (Cincinnati, OH), Kevin Mimms (Anderson, IN), Lisa Mimms (Oklahoma City, OK), and Joseph "Tyrone" Mimms Sr (Anderson, IN); grandchildren, Kenneth Woods Sr, Terrance "Ted" Collier, Tonia Robinson, Britt Mallett, Karl Byrd Sr, Andrea "Tiana" Byrd, Andrea Holland (Gerald), Ana-Nicole Mimms, Ella Mae Mimms, Miaesha Price, Daenisha Nelson (Donovan), Gregory Street, Carmen Street, La Kia "Nikki" Watkins, Racien Ford (Anthony), Scotland Haskins, Garrett Haskins, Christian Shelton, Joseph Mimms Jr, Marlisa Mimms, and Julianna Mimms. She was the matriarch of six generations to include 30+ great-grandchildren, 10+ great-great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-great-grandchild. She had a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and those that she mothered in the community that affectionately referred to her as "Mother Mimms". She was preceded in death by her parents Kit George Sr. and Bessie George; siblings Catherine "Cat" Mc Worter, Kit George Jr, Fred George, Ernest Nash, Bessie George Dixon, Mozelle George Tellis; daughters Kandie Mimms and Suzy "Sue" Mimms; grandsons Edward "Fee" Collier, Larry Byrd Jr, Kevin Mimms Jr, Terrell Gordon, and Albert Robinson.
Ella was honored and respected by all who knew her. She lived by her words, actions and mostly her Faith. Putting God first, she always let us know everything would be ok (regarding life) and instilled the sayings "just keep smiling and say hello" and "just wait on time". She would sing, calmingly, a collective of spirituals. Many in which we would record and join in. Growing up it was "Jesus Is On The Main Line". The recent one that rings in our ears was her singing "This Old Building" (Keeps on Leaning), as it was the last song she sang before her travel.
Ella not only shared her songs, but her wisdom and her quick wit that would make anyone in earshot laugh out loud!!! Her discipline invoked lining her children up and teaching "The Golden Rule" saying "How would you like it if someone did it to you?" Everyone also recognized that "Momma, Big Momma, and "Mother Mimms" were our champion for her greens, ham, yeast rolls, and the sweet potato pies. Unmatched!
Ella very much believed in being involved in the community.
History and Accolades:
Ella was the senior and eldest survivor at Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church. During the times she was unable to attend she consistently paid her tithes teaching us the value of spiritual giving as we observed the rewards of God's promise.
Ella sang with her cousins in a musical group with her cousin Idelle.
She worked in hospital settings at St Ambrose Hospital (custodial care), St John's Hospital (as a Nurse Aide) and was a volunteer Candy Striper. Her work also included being a caregiver for "Mrs. Townsend".
She often worked at the election polls and volunteered working the phone banks during the campaign years for President Barack Obama.
Ella's tenure was at General Motors in Anderson, IN achieving nearly 30 years, hired in 1968 and retired in April of 1997. Where she was a mem
She was a member and volunteered for United Way.
And last, but not least a beloved member of the popular Red Hat Ladies. How she loved her hats!
Through it all our hearts are heavy, but more so, we are so grateful and overjoyed for her Divine intervention in our lives. She left us with her peace, God's Peace.
