Ellen Gabes, 74 of Winchester, Virginia passed away January 20, 2025. She was the
daughter of the late Max and Mimi Adler. Born January 23, 1950 in Ventnor, New
Jersey. Ellen is survived by her beloved husband of 33 years, Marc Gabes, her sister
Nancy Adler, brother Jim Adler, daughters Elizabeth Palma and Kelly Borkowski, her
grandson Gabriel Palma, and last, but certainly not least, her two dogs Charlie and
Winnie.
Her earlier years at the beach with her sister Nancy developed her great
appreciation for the ocean and swimming. She was an avid horseback rider as well
as a talented piano player. She enjoyed playing classical music on her prized
Steinway, which she continued to play throughout her life.
She attended The University of Miami as an English major but her love for horses and
riding turned into a career as a certified ARICP riding instructor. She and her
husband Marc owned and operated an equine facility in Sandwich, New Hampshire.
Ellen maintained lifelong friendships with many of the children she taught.
Ellen loved to laugh and be with the people and animals she cared about most. She
loved holidays, especially Christmas, where she often transformed the whole house
into a Christmas village. There was always an open door policy at the house for
someone to stay for a day or years, which many did.
Ellen's deep love for animals was the catalyst for the rescue of any creature, great
and small. This included horses, cats, birds, mice, and especially dogs, as well as
anyone in need who could benefit from her generous nature. She had the perfect
partner in Marc who was happy to rescue and love right along with her.
A Celebration of Ellen's life will be held April 4, 2025 at 1 PM at the Middleburg
Community Center. 300 W Washington Street, Middleburg, VA 20117
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the
