Beloved Son, Brother, Father & Papa
ELMER LOUIS KA'IWAPUA'ALI'I MARQUES JR.
August 17, 1942 – August 24, 2025
A beloved son, brother, father, and Papa, Elmer Louis Ka'iwapua'ali'i Marques Jr. of Ka'alaea, Kahalu'u,
peacefully entered eternal life on August 24, 2025, at the age of 83. He attended St. Ann's School in
Kaneohe until the 8th grade and was a 1960 graduate of St. Louis High School, where he lettered in
football and in golf. He attended Southern Oregon University and made his way back home to beautiful
Hawai'i.
Elmer had a passion for selling cars and worked in the automobile industry for over 46 years with various
companies including Honolulu Ford, Datsun of Hawaii (Nissan), and Toyota. He also opened Portuguese
Used Cars, Marques Auto leasing, and Country Cars. His attraction for cars came second to his first
loves... crabbing, fishing and hunting.
Elmer was a master deer hunter and throw-net fisherman. He made sure that his Moloka'i adventures
were filled with family and friends. It was important to him that we spent our summers reconnecting with
the land while staying at the Moloka'i Ranch, where we enjoyed swimming, opihi picking, fishing, hunting
and learning the ways of our ancestors.
His heart always gravitated to Ka'alaea, Kaneohe Bay, where he enjoyed early morning crabbing
excursions with his four daughters or sharing sunset gatherings on his pontoon boat, while listening to
Hawaiian music. He was an avid collector of glass fishing floats of all sizes and colors and generously
shared them with his family and friends. He loved reminiscing about his fishing or hunting trips with his
besties. He respected the ocean and was overjoyed to witness fishing and hunting techniques that he
learned from his parents, being used by his children, grandchildren, and even the great grandchildren. He
always showed his gratitude for being loved by his family throughout his lifetime. This was his legacy.
We called him El, Dad, and Papa, and he is missed daily and will live in our hearts forever. He was
preceded in death by parents, Elmer Louis Marques Sr. and Elizabeth Lahilahi Kama'i Marques; brother,
Steven David Marques; daughter, Cheryl Ann Marques Leong. Elmer is survived by daughters Rita Among
(Pat), Leslie Lam (Merv), Kelly Spencer (Chuck); 11 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
