Elmer Wart Obituary

Elmer L. Wart, 86, passed away February 23, 2024, at Unity Point-St. Lukes's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Visitation: 4-8 PM, Wednesday, February 28th, 2024 at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Elmer was born on August 16, 1937, in Waubeek, Iowa. He was the son of Leroy Wart and Elsie McLucas Metcalf. Elmer enjoyed working on the farm in his younger years. Moving to Cedar Rapids in 1980, he was an all-around handyman. People will remember Elmer riding his bike with a mower or a cart full of cans around the SE side of Cedar Rapids. The honorary mayor of Mt. Vernon Rd. had never a callous word to say about anyone. He was the loudest whistler and the best rubber-necker around. His love of music, cards, puzzles, pigs and BINGO made for an extremely generous heart and smile. He will be missed by his family; brothers, Richard(Shirley)Ward and Maynard(Lola)Wart, and sisters Clarabelle Taylor and Dorothy(Garry)Grimm. His best friend, Rick White, and family will also miss Elmer. He was greeted in heaven by his parents, sister Geneva(Bob)Eiben and brother in law Raymond Taylor. In lieu of flowers, memorial monies will help with Elmer's final resting expenses. Online condolences are welcome at www.cedarmemorial.com under obituaries.

I have worked at Mercy Care on Mt Vernon Road for 20 years! Elmer would always come get cans from us! He was always whistling and had a smile on his face! The sweetest man ever! Rest in peace Elmer!

Elmer was a wonderful and kind soul who ALWAYS had a smile on his face, sparkle in his eye, and a laugh in his conversation with you.

I remember finding a little pig flashlight that oinked at a store. The kids and I bought it and took it over to his place to give it to him. (You knew you had the right place as the front door of his apartment and the space around it was filled with stuffed pigs and other cute pig decor.
I think he brought joy to EVERYONE with whom he crossed paths. A life well lived Certainly God will be happy to welcome Elmer!
We will always hold him fondly in our hearts.

R.I.P. Elmer I didnt know Elmer personally but when I was working and living in CR i would run in to him at the Handimart on the SW side and the next time at the Hy Vee by Lindale. He was everywhere and always in a joyous mood like he didn't have a worry in life.

As a resident of the SE side just off of Mount Vernon Road, I have had the occasion to come across Elmer many times. He was a friendly fellow who always had a story to tell. He will be missed by the passersby as well as the many people in the shops that line the street that he would stop in daily to talk to. He was a blessing to your day if you had the good fortune of running into him. RIP Elmer!
