Elsie Gockel

Elsie Gockel, 92, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 10:58 pm January 21, 2024 at Saint Louis University Hospital in Saint Louis, Missouri. She was born August 23, 1931 in Randolph County, Arkansas to the late Dallas and Naomi (Miller) Mays. Elsie married John R. Gockel on April 25, 1978. They were blessed with nearly forty-three years of marriage before he preceded her in death on January 5, 2021.
Elsie is survived by her son, Randy Lowery of West Frankfort, Illinois; grandchildren, Katherine Gockel, Joseph Paul Gockel, Eric Gockel, Ashley Gockel, Andria Clarke, Tyler Lowery, Whitney Walker, and Caitlyn Lowery; great-grandchildren, Hannah, Christian, and Lydia Gockel, Alyson Craig, and Ian Bonner, Justine Mize, Brennon and Wrenley Walker, and Sawyer Clarke; several nieces and nephews; siblings, Allen Sanders and wife, Paula, Donald Sanders and wife, Debbie, Ronald Sanders and wife, Kathy, Paul Sanders, Francis Curtis, and Georgia Hopkins.
In addition to her parents and husband, Elsie was preceded in death by her step sons, Bob Gockel, Rick Gockel, and Terry Lee Gockel; sister, Lola Powell and Orlis Tindle; and grandson, John Robert Gockel.
Elsie worked at IGA in Mount Vernon as a meat wrapper for many years.
A Funeral Service will be held Friday, January 26, 2024 at 1:00 pm at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens Chapel in Woodlawn, Illinois with Reverend Mark Dye officiating. Interment will follow. Memorials may be made in Elsie's honor to Park Avenue Baptist Food Pantry.
