Elsie was born on May 21, 1936 in Marion, NY to Abram and Nettie Boerman. She was the eldest of 6
children. She worked hard on her parents farm growing up. She went to Marion High school until she
was a junior. During high school she played the Accordion, the Trombone and the Organ. She met and
married her first husband John Vander Heide in 1955. They lived in MA while he was stationed in the
Army. They later returned to New York in 1958. Elsie was devastated when John later passed away
from a brain tumor.
Elsie`s family sponsored a family that immigrated from the Netherlands and that is how she met
Leonard Poot. She later married Leonard Poot on September 30, 1960 in New York. They were married
for 60 years. In 1964 Elsie and Leonard moved out to Ohio for a year, then to California in 1965. They
lived in the San Joaquin Valley in California for 20 years. During that time they ran a chicken ranch.
Later they grew English cucumbers and Tomatoes in a large greenhouse operation in Patterson. In 1985
they took a leap up to Oregon. They had a tractor and Snapper dealership in Hubbard. In 1992 they
started Grower`s Nursery Supply, which they moved to the north Salem area in 1995. She was the
bookkeeper for their businesses. Leonard and Elsie sold their business and retired in 2005, remained
living in Salem.
Elsie and Leonard were active in the church throughout the years. She played the Organ on a regular
basis on Sundays. They enjoyed camping in the summertime with the church group and family. They
were able to take their motor home and drive across country twice to visit family on the east coast and
sight see along the way. She enjoyed the ladies group at church that she still attended after Leonard
passed. Elsie`s hobbies in life included; family genealogy, knitting hats, scarves and afghans for family,
plus baby hats with matching booties for the Crisis Pregnancy center. She enjoyed doing box puzzles
and word puzzles.
Elsie was a dedicated selfless wife, homemaker, mother, and grandparent. She will always live in our
hearts with her beautiful smile. May she rest in peace with our Lord God.
