On August 6, 2025 Emanuel Edward Hess, Sr., age 99 and a half, went home to be with his Lord and Savior where he joined countless family members and friends who preceded him. Some of those being his first wife, Anna Pearl Ray Hess (mother of their 6 children) and his second wife, Geneva Porter Hess. Also preceding him was one son, Emanuel E. Hess, Jr.; three grandchildren, Ronnie Talbott, Jr., Teresa Peregoy, and Kristi Perkins.
Surviving him are his children, Mary Ann Cole (James), Evelyn Joyce Hess, Dixie Lynn Hess, Barbara Hess Clay (Randall), and Donald Raymond Hess, Sr. (Leslie); 8 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his sister, Iris Eury; brothers, Luther Allen Hess, Roger Hess (Judy), and daughter-in-law, Debra Hess; and many extended family members.
Emanuel Edward was born on January 6, 1926 in Russell County, VA where he learned at a young age farming, amongst other various jobs, how to work and supply for a family. He also met his first wife, Anna, there and started their family. Edward eventually moved to North Carolina, where he worked in an ore mine until it shut down. At that time he was led to Halifax County where he worked until retiring at Vulcan Materials.
Edward was a devoted husband, great father, "Poppaw"/ "Poppy", son, and brother. Not a day would go by but what he would thank his Savior for ALL his blessings (whether it was raining or shining) he thanked the Lord for a beautiful day! Even in declining health he ALWAYS thanked God for giving him another day and a good night's rest. Thank the Lord for such an example of what we should all be!
We would like to thank Marsha's Home Care Agency and all the caregivers who took excellent care of our Dad. A special thanks to Jackie and Doris who did a tremendous job of caring for him in his last days.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 11, 2025 at 2pm in the Brooks Lyon Funeral Home Chapel, with Visitation starting one hour prior. The service will be officiated by his grandson, Pastor Donald Link, Jr.
