Emily Hathaway Clark died on January 5, 2026, in Provo, Utah, surrounded by her loving husband, her children, and her sister and best friend. She left a legacy of love and service that will endure in her children and grandchildren.
Emily was born July 19th,1952, in Spanish Fork, Utah. She was the fifth child and third daughter of James Eldred and Darlene Johnson Hathaway. Emily was raised in Spanish Fork and graduated from Spanish Fork High School in 1970. She attended Utah Technical College, then worked as a bank teller, a loan secretary, and an attendance secretary at Orem Junior High School for over 20 years.
She met her husband, Paul Clark, in her ninth grade math class. He thought she was the prettiest girl at Spanish Fork High, and it turned out she was kind, too. He teased her to get her attention, and somehow it worked. They were high school sweethearts, then married in the Provo LDS Temple on April 5th,1972. Emily and Paul were blessed with four children and 14 grandchildren.
More than anything else, Emily wanted to be a mother. She had gentle hands and a deep well of strength that sustained her family. Emily loved to sew and stitch. She made beautiful dolls, dresses, and detailed handwork. She baked delicious bread and was famous for assembling delightful gift bags. Emily had a creative spirit and a unique sense of style that endures in the talents of her grandchildren.
She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in callings in the Primary, Young Women, and Relief Society organizations throughout her life. Those opportunities to serve challenged her to gain new skills and expand her influence, but the best expression of her faith were the friendships she forged among her fellow saints.
Perhaps the greatest of Emily's talents was her love for the underdog. She loved people in their weakness, vulnerability, and struggle. Emily had little interest in the accolades of the world. Instead, she was keenly aware of the "least of these" and offered them compassion and care. She was a generous gift giver and a bargain hunter who sought things that would be useful or pleasing to others. She found value in people and things that others overlooked. She loved lunch dates with her sisters and friends. Her grandchildren brought her great comfort and delight, and she loved and cherished each of them.
Emily is survived by her beloved husband of 53 years, Paul, and her four children: Gina (Marden) Clark, Marilee Clark, Jon Paul (Cathy) Clark, and Joel (Jill) Clark. She is loved and remembered by her grandchildren: Leslie, Susanna, Caroline, Mary, Dorothy, Eva, Joseph, Lucy, Marek, Jaren, Calvin, Nolan, Hagan, and Bode, and her siblings Larry Hathaway, Lanny Hathaway, Millie (Brent) Cannon, Gordon Hathaway, and Michael (Valerie) Hathaway. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Darlene Hathaway, her brother, Wendell Hathaway, and her sister, Elaine (Reid) Carlson. We express our deep gratitude to all those who eased her burdens during her final illness, especially her nurses at Utah Valley Hospital, Lori and Karissa, and her sister, Millie, who brought peace and comfort to Emily whenever she walked in the room.
We will honor Emily with a funeral on Tuesday, January 13 at 11:30 am in the City Center 5th Ward Building at 85 E 700 N, Orem, Utah. A viewing will be held the evening prior, Monday, January 12, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at Walker Sanderson Funeral Home in Orem, and preceding the funeral from 10-11 am on Tuesday at the church.
