Eric Recktenwald, 57, passed away unexpectedly on October 21 st, 2023, while biking in DuPont
State Forest. His family is devastated by the loss but takes comfort in knowing he passed while
doing something he loved in a beautiful place.
Eric was born on May 5, 1966, to Gerald and Sonia Recktenwald in
Hornell, New York. He is
survived by both of his parents, as well as his two older brothers, George (Paige) and Mark
(Wendy) Recktenwald. Eric was a dedicated and warm father to his two sons, Nick and Sam
Recktenwald, who are honored to carry his light into the world with help from their wives,
Kelsey and Tricia. Nick and Sam will ensure that Eric's grandchildren – Oliver, Baker, and Imogen
– know how much joy and love they brought their grandfather. Eric's passing will be mourned
by his longtime partner, Teresa Grant, as well as the mother of his children, Susan Lorow. He
will be missed by too many friends, cousins, nephews, aunts, and uncles to name here – a
testament to how much Eric valued connection and community.
Eric was a warm, generous person with a sharp mind and even sharper sense of humor. He
brought laughter with him wherever he went. Family and friends will miss most the
mischievous twinkle in his eyes before he told a joke, gently teased, or pulled a good-natured
prank. Eric knew how to play hard, but he worked even harder – especially on behalf of those
he loved. He earned his bachelor's degree in ceramic engineering from Alfred University and
built a 30+ year career in manufacturing as an engineer who put out both literal and figurative
fires. He spent the last 17 years of his career at Kyocera International in Hendersonville, North
Carolina, where he was an invaluable friend, colleague, and leader.
Eric moved his family to North Carolina from New York in 1995 and found home in
Hendersonville and the Blue Ridge Mountains. He found a balance of both peace and
excitement in the natural splendor of the region. When not working (a rare occurrence!), he
could be found taking his sons on adventures, fishing or biking with friends, singing karaoke
with Teresa, playing his guitar, being disappointed by the Buffalo Bills, or helping any friend in
need with a chore, errand, or project.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Eric's life on Friday, October 27 th at 2PM at Shuler
Funeral Home (125 Orr's Camp Road
Hendersonville, NC 28792). We will also gather for
fellowship and to share memories of Eric shortly after the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that gifts be made to the North Carolina Wildlife Federation or any other
charitable organization that would honor the memory of our joyous and caring father, brother,
son, partner, and friend.
