James Woodrow Craft, Jr., affectionately known as Jim to friends and family, a devoted family man, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2026, in
Asheville, North Carolina, at the age of 89. Born on May 27, 1936, in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, Jim led a life marked by service, dedication, and love.
Jim proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army, where he was stationed at various locations, including Iceland. During his time in the Army, he found joy playing basketball on an Army team, competing against other military teams. Following his honorable service, Jim pursued higher education at Duke University, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in Geology and fell in love with a young nursing student named Faye Glasgow. They married in 1960 in Weldon, North Carolina, and he loved her until his last breath. Jim and Faye lived in various cities during his thirty-year career with US Steel, with most of it spent in
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he was an active community volunteer, establishing a softball league and coaching various sports teams for his children. When not at the softball or soccer fields, Jim shared his love of nature with many camping trips in the Appalachian Mountains.
After retirement, Jim embraced his love for the mountains by relocating to Brevard, North Carolina, and later settling in Dana, North Carolina near Hendersonville. He dedicated much of his time to volunteering with Habitat for Humanity in Hendersonville, Brevard, and the surrounding areas. His commitment to community service extended to assisting various church groups with building ramps and completing home improvement projects for those in need.
Jim's deep affection for animals was evident through his lifelong companionship with his beloved dogs, including his faithful companion Spike, who was able to spend time with him just prior to Jim's passing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lelia Earhart Craft and James Woodrow Craft, Sr.; his beloved wife of over 50 years, Faye Glasgow Craft; and his granddaughter, Reilly Simmons. Jim leaves behind a loving family who will cherish his memory: his
daughters, Catherine Jo "Cathy" Craft (Vicki) and Traci Simmons (Shane); and his son, Lieutenant Colonel (retired) James "Zipper"
Woodrow Craft III (Sonya). His grandchildren Brayden Craft, Zachary Craft (Mary Douglas), Devin Simmons and Keely Simmons, and his great-grandson Turner Craft will miss him immensely; as will the numerous friends who were touched by his kindness and generosity.
In accordance with Jim's wishes, there will be no memorial service. His family invites those who knew him to remember Jim in their own personal ways, celebrating a life well-lived and a legacy of love and service.
