Eric Allen Shaugabay, 50, of
Warroad, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2026, at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota, surrounded by his loved ones.
Eric was born on September 10, 1975, in
Roseau, Minnesota, to Marvin and Mary (Rindy) Shaugabay. He grew up in Warroad, where he developed a lifelong love for hockey, fishing, and spending time with friends and family. Eric graduated from Warroad High School in 1994.
In March of 1996, Eric met the love of his life, Suzi. Together they built a life centered on family, laughter, and loyalty. They welcomed their first son, Gage, in November of 1997, and were united in marriage on August 18, 2001. Their family grew as they lovingly took in their nephew, Adam, and later welcomed Jori in November of 2005 and Anders in 2007. Eric was a devoted husband and a funny, stubborn dad who loved his kids deeply and took great pride in his family.
Eric worked at several places throughout his life, including Lake View Restaurant, Seven Clans Casino, Marvin's, Streiff's Sporting Goods, Supply Tech, and ODC. No matter where he worked, Eric was known for his strong work ethic and easygoing nature. Due to health issues, he retired early in 2020.
He loved taking friends and family fishing, traveling, and exploring new places. Eric was especially fond of trips to Seven Clans Casino in Warroad, where he enjoyed playing the slots. A loyal supporter of Minnesota sports teams, he also enjoyed coaching Gage's hockey team for a few years and remained involved in local hockey. Some of his favorite moments were spent playing 31 with friends and family, sharing laughs, stories, and friendly competition.
In retirement, Eric embraced his role as a stay-at-home dog dad, lovingly caring for his dogs Tinker, Quavo, Queen, Lola, and Mallow, who brought him great joy and companionship.
Eric is survived by his wife, Suzi; his children, Gage, Adam, Jori, and Anders; and many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Mary Shaugabay; his siblings, Lisa Shaugabay and Robert Monnell; and his grandparents, Richard and Francis Shaugabay, and Arnold and Anna Mae (Rindy) Thompson.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 22, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Funeral services will take place on Friday, January 23, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.
Eric will be cremated, with no additional services to follow.
Eric will be remembered for his quick humor, his stubborn determination, and the way he showed his love simply by showing up. While we can imagine him now checking the slot machines and keeping an eye on all of us, his greatest jackpot will always be the family and friends who carry his memory forward.
