Erma Mae (Layman) Raish, passed away at the age of 101 on Monday, October 16, 2023. She was born on March 11, 1922, in Rockingham County, to William D. and Fortuna (Devers) Layman.
Erma was known for her unwavering determination and kind heart. After graduating Dayton High School where she played on the basketball team, she embarked on a fulfilling career with Duplan, and became a member of the Bethlehem Brethren Church and the WMS. In her spare time, Erma loved gardening and growing flowers.
Throughout her life, Erma possessed a resilient spirit and a strong sense of community. She demonstrated a genuine dedication to her loved ones, always making time for her family. She is survived by her grandson, Hugh W. Powel III and wife, Courtney, and three great-grandchildren, Mera, Lila, and Scarlett.
In addition to her parents, Erma was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Roy Raish, who she married on May 24, 1941; daughter, Jean Raish Powel; sister, Jean Henton; brothers, Kenneth and William Layman.
A funeral service to celebrate Erma's remarkable life will be held 11 AM Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023, at Bethlehem Brethren Church in Harrisonburg, inviting family, friends, and community members to gather and honor a woman who touched so many lives. Burial will follow at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Bridgewater.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to Bethlehem Brethren Church.
