In Loving Memory of Ernell Posey
February 25, 1938 – May 3, 2025

Ernell Posey, affectionately known as "MOON" to many, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2025. Born on February 25, 1938, in Chicago, Illinois, to her beloved mother, Elizabeth Powers, Ernell was lovingly raised by her aunt and uncle, Zula Mae and James Mailey Sr., who played an instrumental role in her upbringing.

Ernell attended Wadsworth Elementary School and went on to attend DuSable High School. She discovered her faith at an early age and was baptized in 1992 at the Church of Christ in Gary, Indiana. Her spiritual journey was a grounding force in her life and shaped the compassion and joy she brought to others.

In 1953, Ernell married Carl D. Moon Sr., and together they welcomed one daughter, Carla D. Moon. The couple shared a love for business, owning and operating several establishments, including liquor stores and barbecue houses, which served their community with pride.

Professionally, Ernell worked in the hospitality industry for over 30 years. She held supervisory roles in housekeeping and laundry at various downtown Chicago hotels. She retired from the Omni Ambassador East Hotel in 2001 to care for her great-grandchild, a role she embraced with dedication and love. Ernell loved selflessly. Though she gave birth to one child, she raised many others as her own at a young age, giving them the same unwavering love, care, and guidance.

Ernell lived life vibrantly and unapologetically. Known for her radiant spirit, she was truly the life of the party-lighting up every room she entered. She had a signature jazzy style and delighted in receiving compliments about her look. Ernell loved to dance, to shop, and to surround herself with the people she loved.

She was preceded in death by her great-nephew, Fred Woods.

Ernell leaves behind her loving daughters, Carla D. Moon, Janice (James) Williams and Marie (Gerald) Ward; her granddaughter, Danielle Moon; great-granddaughter, JaNayzia Arielle Brown; Ernell is also survived by Marie and Gerald's six children and their children, her sister, Harriet McDowell; niece, Elizabeth (Willie) Massey; and great-niece, Lydia Turner.

She is also lovingly remembered by her devoted companion of 34 years, Ozzie, and his children by love: Sandra, Myra, and Oswaldo Jr. Ernell leaves behind her best friend, Cynthia; her special friend, Bo; and a cherished circle of childhood friends Margo, Miriam, Josephine, and Marguerite. She also leaves behind a host of grandchildren by love who affectionately called her "Nana," and countless friends who lovingly knew her as "Moon."

To know Ernell was to love her. Her laughter, loyalty, and light will be deeply missed, but her memory will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
