Ernest “Ernie” Carrillo, 92, passed away peacefully at home on January 7, 2026, surrounded by the family he loved so deeply. He was born on May 27, 1933, in Cuba, New Mexico, to Martin Carrillo and Mary Carrillo.
In his early childhood, Ernie’s family moved from New Mexico to Colorado before ultimately settling in Utah in 1942. He attended West High School, where he was a proud member of the ROTC program, an early reflection of his lifelong dedication to service.
In 1953, Ernie enlisted in the United States Marine Corps with the intention of supporting efforts in the Korean War. With the signing of the armistice, his path shifted, and he served honorably in Hawaii and abroad in Japan. Remembering the places he served as beautiful, and the people he met as kind and welcoming.
After returning home from military service, Ernie continued pursuing the love of his life, Angel Moreno. They were married on December 1, 1956, beginning a 58-year partnership defined by devotion, admiration, humor, and companionship. Ernie often said he “loved everything she did,” believing she was the most beautiful woman he had ever known. He especially loved her eyes, a detail he mentioned with sincerity and pride.
In 1958, Ernie and Angel purchased their first and only home. A home they filled with love, tireless work, and countless family gatherings. Together, they created a warm and welcoming home and a yard admired throughout the neighborhood for its beauty and care. They enjoyed attending high school baseball games, metal detecting adventures, and the quiet joy of being home together. Their bond remains an enduring cornerstone of the Carrillo family legacy.
Ernie was a loving father, grandfather, brother, and uncle whose warmth, humor, and loyalty shaped generations. He cherished every moment spent with family, especially supporting his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. He always had a treat ready for the kids and found great joy in giving gifts, sharing his time, and celebrating others.
Ernie was preceded in death by his beloved wife Angel, his parents Martin and Mary, and his siblings Abel, Willie, Ben, Sabel, Olojia, Marciana, Olivama, Rita, Johnny, and several others he held dear.
He is survived by his children: Monica, Sally (Dennis), Rowland, and Nancy; 10 grandchildren: Posha, Angel, Alexis, Mesha, Kelly (Stephanie), Reeko (Scott), Vincent (Pam), Dino, Faith (Abram), and Myles; 11 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-greatgrandchildren.
A Celebration of Life gathering will be held in his honor at a later date. Details will be shared with family and friends.
Ernie will be deeply missed, but his laughter lives on, his generosity will continue to inspire, and his love will remain forever carried forward by those who were blessed to know him.
