Ernest Hathaway Obituary

Publish in a newspaper

Ernest Nelson Hathaway passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loving family, on August 28, 2025, at the age of 73, ending a long battle with Parkinsons.

He was born on April 12, 1952, in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada, to David Squire and Lila Bertha Milligan Skidmore. He was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his loving wife, Kim Hathaway, who he was sealed to in the Salt Lake Temple on May 5th, 1980; his children, Adam (Katrina), Ashley, and Katie (Bobby); eight cherished grandchildren; his mother, Janet Skidmore; his siblings Bob (Lorna) and Heather (Glen); and his many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Ernest dedicated his life to helping others achieve financial security, working as a financial planner and advisor. His work was not only his career but his true passion. In his younger years, Ernest earned his pilot's license and enjoyed flying a small plane, a reflection of the adventurous spirit he carried throughout his life.

Music was another thread tightly woven into who he was. His deep bass voice left a lasting impression on those who heard it. He sang in numerous choirs and shows throughout the years, and at home he instilled a love of Neil Diamond in all of his children. He was often caught "conducting" imaginary orchestras, even while driving. His love of music brought joy to both himself and those around him.

Throughout his career, Ernest was committed to lifelong learning, regularly attending seminars and pursuing professional development. His dedication and expertise in financial planning earned him many honors and awards, reflecting the respect and admiration he garnered from colleagues and clients alike.

Ernest was also a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He held many callings over the years and was always willing to serve wherever he was needed. One of his greatest joys was teaching Gospel Doctrine, where his love of the scriptures and thoughtful insights touched many lives. His faith guided him throughout his life, and he found fulfillment in serving both the Lord and those around him.

He will be remembered for his sharp mind, his devotion to family, and his constant mantra of saying, "I'm happy," in any situation. Those who knew him often remarked on his even temperament, which was a steady source of peace and reassurance to those around him. His legacy lives on through his family and the many lives he touched.

The family would like to thank Rocky Mountain Homecare and Hospice for their compassionate care and support during the final chapter of Ernest's life. They are also deeply grateful to their wonderful extended family members, neighbors, friends, and ward family, whose love, service, and support have brought comfort during this time.

There will be a viewing at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 S State St., Murray, UT, on Tuesday, September 2, from 7:00-9:00 PM.

The funeral will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints South Cottonwood Ward building, 5605 S Vine St, Murray, UT at 11:00 AM with a viewing there beforehand from 10:00-10:45. Following the funeral, the graveside service will be held at Elysian Burial Gardens, 1075 E 4580 S, Millcreek, UT.
