Philip F. Hathaway Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and dedicated community member, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on August 22, 2025. He was 83 years old.
Born on June 19, 1942, in
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Philip was the eldest son of Philip F. Hathaway and Katherine Hathaway. He grew up alongside his cherished siblings, Robert, Gay Ann, and Nancy, who held a special place in his heart throughout his life.
Philip was part of the first graduating class of Upper St. Clair High School in 1960, a meaningful milestone that set him on a path of achievement and service. He continued his education at Eastern Kentucky University, earning a Bachelor's degree in Business. During his college years, he was an active member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and participated in Army ROTC, where he developed the leadership and camaraderie that would define his life.
Upon graduation, Philip was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. He served his country with honor, completing a tour in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969. During his service, he fought with courage in the Tet Offensive and participated in Operation Phoenix, earning the respect of all who served alongside him. After returning home, Philip transitioned to civilian life in Pittsburgh, embarking on a distinguished career in commercial real estate, hotel, and restaurant management.
He managed the Sheraton Hotel in Moon Township, a pivotal chapter in his life as it was there he met his future wife, Catherine Rodgers. They were married on April 26, 1975, at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Together, they built a loving family and shared a remarkable journey filled with adventure, resilience, and deep devotion.
Philip's professional pursuits were diverse and impactful. He played a central role in Pittsburgh's commercial development with the Penn Central Corporation, brokering significant deals, including the sale of a railroad parcel in upstate New York. This opportunity prompted a move to northwest Connecticut, where Philip managed and developed farmland, residential, and commercial properties. Later, he ventured into hospital administration, contributing to the growth of Sharon Hospital and establishing a nursing facility-demonstrating his commitment to enhancing community well-being.
Philip eventually returned with his family to the South Hills of Pittsburgh, where he purchased his father's interest in the St. Clair Building Company. For twenty years, he managed the company with integrity and vision, ensuring it remained a proud family-owned and operated business-a legacy that endures to this day.
Above all, Philip was a family man. He and Catherine nurtured a loving home for their children-Carissa, Philip III, and Robert-instilling values of loyalty, laughter, and compassion. He found joy in family vacations to Pittsburgh and the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where cherished memories were made. He delighted in sporting events, especially cheering on the Pittsburgh Steelers, and relished barbecues, fireworks, boating, and simple Sundays spent reading the newspaper and watching football.
Philip is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Catherine; his children Tiffany, Kimberly, Carissa, Philip III, and Robert; his cherished grandchildren Grace, Caleb, Aiden, Ava, Joshua, Lila, Evelyn, Declan, and Colin; and his great-grandson, Keenan. He is also remembered fondly by his siblings, extended family, and many friends who will miss his wisdom, wit, and unwavering support.
A military memorial service honoring Philip's life and service will be held on August 29, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Tunnel to Towers, the
Wounded Warrior Project, or your local animal shelter, reflecting Philip's enduring spirit of generosity and care for others.
Philip F. Hathaway Jr. leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and accomplishment. He will be remembered always for his steadfast commitment to his family, his country, and his community.
