Ernest (Ernie) Paul Moore, 97, of Pompton Plains, died February 1, 2025 having lived a very full life.
Raised in St. Joseph, Missouri spending summers on a relative's farm and helping out at his father's gas station during the school year. He was in the U.S. Navy reserve post WWII and called into active duty during the Korean War serving on the USS Harry E. Hubbard (DD-748) as a Second-Class Electronics Technician. His ship was part of a fast carrier strike force that made repeated airstrikes against enemy targets. Following his Navy service, he completed his studies at the University of Colorado with a degree in electrical engineering in 1954
He married his high school sweetheart, Hazel Viola Gore in 1948. In 1954 they moved to Berkeley Heights, NJ and raised three daughters there. Ernie spent his entire career as an engineer with Bell Labs and then through acquisitions into Lucent Technologies. He worked on Telstar, an experimental communications satellite, undersea cable technologies, fiber optics, and other communication projects that took him around the world. He is named on an electrical engineering patent issued in 1958.
He loved to travel with Antarctica being the only continent he did not visit. Walking on the Great Wall of China and snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia as well as cruising through the Panama Canal are some of his most exciting travel experiences. Visiting his cousin on the big Island of Hawaii was always his favorite destination.
In 1962, Ernie was a charter member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Berkeley Heights, NJ. He was active in the church holding a variety of positions well into his 90's. He spent many years in retirement volunteering for the American Red Cross delivering meals on wheels or driving people to medical appointments. His final 3 years were spent with new friends and caring staff at the Cedar Crest community in Pompton Plains, NJ.
Ernie was predeceased by his wife, parents, and brothers. He is survived by his daughter, Pamela Jean Moore, his daughter Vicki Lynn Browne and husband Richard W. Browne, and his daughter Debbie Anne Treich and her husband Martin Gregory Treich.
