Ernest Francis "Ernie" Panacek Jr.

It is with profound regret that we announce the passing of Ernest "Ernie" Francis Panacek Jr. after a courageous battle with ALS. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, uncle, colleague, and friend, as well as a cornerstone leader of the seafood industry. Throughout his 36-year career as the general manager of Viking Village, he centered his work around sustainability and fishermen advocacy, with an unwavering support for the local, state, and national seafood economy. The legacy of his work will ripple for decades to come.

While growing up in Mercerville, NJ, Ernie worked for his father's truck repair business, and their family often went fishing on the Jersey Shore in the summer. After graduating from Marquette University with a degree in accounting, he came to Barnegat Light to pursue commercial fishing and was discovered by Captain John Larson. Ernie's specific skill set fit perfectly into the world of Viking Village, and this is also how he met his wife, Kristine. They further pursued their vision of sustainable seafood together by opening a restaurant – Off The Hook – drawing in the crowds and showcasing local favorites like scallops – for almost two decades.

Through the years of raising their family in Barnegat Light, Ernie instilled in his children and everyone around him a love for seafood, a respect for the ocean, and a deep understanding of what it means to work hard every day, no matter the circumstances. He will always be remembered for his unfailing work ethic, his truly deep and genuine care for those around him, and his enthusiastic presence as a father, manager and friend.

Ernie is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Kristine, his three beloved children, Sonja, Anna, and John and their spouses; his three adored granddaughters, Natalie, Ava, and Olivia; and his two cherished sisters, Helen and Geraldine. His nephews, nieces, colleagues, and friends will also hold him dear in their hearts forever.
