Ernest Jay "Ernie" Sherman

Ernest Jay Sherman, known affectionately as Ernie to his friends and family, passed away peacefully at his home in Perry on February 1, 2025, at the age of 73. Born on November 28, 1951, in Lansing, Michigan, he was the cherished son of the late Henry Calvin Sherman and Doris Darby. Ernie's life was a testament to the values of hard work, dedication, and the simple joys of life.
Ernie graduated from Bath High School, where he laid the foundation for a life of service and craftsmanship. After high school, he married Candace May Johnson on August 11, 1973 and together they raised two sons, Steven and Jeffrey. He embarked on a fulfilling career at General Motors, where he dedicated 30 years before retiring in 2004. Ernie's hands were rarely still, as he was very skilled with woodworking. He lovingly built all the furniture in their family home, each piece a testament to his talent and attention to detail.
Ernie's love for his family was the cornerstone of his life. He is survived by his devoted wife, Candi, with whom he shared countless cherished moments. His legacy continues through his sons, Steven and Jeffrey, who will carry forward his teachings and memories. Ernie's brother, Dan (and wife Martha) Sherman, also survives him, along with his beloved Bassett Hounds, Isabelle and Sophia. He was preceded in death by his siblings Deloris, Sam, Louis, Wayne, and Christine, who welcomed him into eternal rest.
A huge fan of the Lions and Spartans, Ernie's passion for his teams was matched only by his love for woodworking and the great outdoors. He shared many hunting trips with his son Steven, and he particularly loved bow hunting. Ernie was a quiet man, and though his circle was small, it was incredibly strong. He kept his core friends close, valuing deep and lasting connections over fleeting acquaintances.
Those who knew Ernie would describe him as creative, handy, and kind. His creativity was not just evident in his woodworking but in the way he approached life's challenges, always finding unique solutions. His handiness was a gift he generously shared, helping friends and family with projects that will serve as lasting reminders of his skill and generosity.
Ernie's life was one of quiet achievement and steadfast love. His presence was a comforting constant to those around him, and his absence will be deeply felt.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, February 7, 2025 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, 214 S. Main St. Perry. The Sherman family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, from 2:00pm-4:00pm & 6:00pm-8:00pm.
