It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Ernestine Sayles on October 23, 2024, at 6:21 PM, at the remarkable age of 100 years. A beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, Ernestine leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and service. Born on December 23, 1923, in Charleston, South Carolina, to Margaret and John Roper, Ernestine's journey began when her family relocated to Newark, New Jersey, when she was just three months old. She attended Newton Street Elementary School, Robert Treat Junior High School, and Central High School before entering the workforce at the Tie Factory. In February 1942, she married Robert Allen Kirk, Senior, welcoming their only child, Robert A. Kirk, Jr., in March 1944. Ernestine's professional journey took her to the Department of Defense in Elizabeth, NJ and New York City, where she rose from secretary to manager, exemplifying her dedication and work ethic. Her commitment extended beyond her career; she became an active Phillips Metropolitan C.M.E. Church member in 1947, where her favorite Bible verse, Proverbs 3:5-6, guided her actions. Ernestine served in various roles, including President of the D.L. Miller Gospel Chorus for over 20 years, President of the Stewardess Board for almost 30 years, and Vacation Bible School teacher, fostering a strong community spirit. In October 1962, Ernestine met Nathan Sayles at Phillips Metropolitan C.M.E. Church. They were united in marriage by Reverend James G. Brathwaite on June 25, 1967. Their 38 years together were filled with shared faith, travel, and cherished family moments. Known affectionately as Tina, Ernestine's home was a welcoming space for family, friends, and church members during every holiday. Her attention to detail and pursuit of excellence were evident in all she did, reflecting her love for those around her. After 83 years in Newark and over 50 years of service at Phillips, Tina moved to Laurel, Maryland, where she joined Miles Memorial C.M.E. Church as a Stewardess Board Member. She also thrived in her condo community at Victoria Falls, creating lasting friendships. In 2017, she relocated to Avalon Park in Wesley Chapel, Florida, where she embraced her neighbors and became affectionately known as Grandma, Grandma Tina, and Ms. Tina to all of her neighbors. In 2019, she became a member of Carmel Friendship church where she quickly made lasting relationships with other congregants. She cherished her time there, strengthening her faith and worshipping along like minded believers. Ernestine is survived by her son, Robert A. Kirk, Jr. (Mary); grandchildren Aaron, Courtney, Eddy (Noemy); and great-grandchildren Gabriella and Benjamin, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Her vibrant spirit, unwavering faith, and deep love for family and community will be profoundly missed. As we celebrate her life, we find comfort in the memories and the legacy she leaves behind. Rest in peace, dear Tina.
