Ervin was born June 1, 1937 in Rosalie, AL to parents, Joseph Virgil and Alice Irene Thurmond Smith. He worked many years at US Pipe and Foundry and later became an auctioneer working furniture and vintage sales throughout Georgia and Tennessee. He loved exploring yard sales and estate sales most every week. One of his favorite hobbies was keeping scrapbooks.
Survivors include his siblings, Joyce Walton, Mildred McElroy, Eddie Smith(Fayelene), Donald Ray Smith, Rondal Smith. along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Ruby Martin Smith, son, Marty Dwayne Smith, sister, Lucille Dixson, brothers, Tom Smith, D W "Dub" Smith and Marshal Smith.
