Erwin was born September 1, 1935, in Rome, NY, to Erwin Lloyd Briggs and Roberta Jarvis (Morgan) Briggs. Following high school, he proudly enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served his country with honor and distinction for 24 years as an E9. Rising to the rank of Master Chief (Storekeeper). Erwin was also selected for elite and highly prestigious, embassy duty, reflecting the trust placed in his professionalism, integrity, and leadership.

After retiring from military service, Erwin earned a Bachelor's degree in Business and continued his career in government and defense contracting. He worked with Northrop Grumman, contributing to the Stealth Bomber and Strategic Defense Initiative ("Star Wars") projects, and later served as Regional Director for EG&G Dynatrend, overseeing property and operations management.

Outside of his professional life, Erwin had a wide range of interests and talents. He was an avid lover of history, always curious about the past and eager to learn more. He also possessed a largely unknown artistic gift and had a natural ability to sketch and draw. As a young man, he even designed and drew his high school's mascot, a talent that surprised many who knew him later in life.

Erwin enjoyed bowling and achieved a rare distinction in the sport. He was inducted twice into the Bowling Hall of Fame after bowling perfect 300 games, an accomplishment that reflected his focus, discipline and competitive spirit. He also loved to travel and take road trips, embracing adventure and exploration, something he continued to enjoy well into his 80s.

In his later years, Erwin lived with his daughter, Amy, where he was able to remain surrounded by family and cherish the joy of watching some of his grandchildren grow up, a gift that meant a great deal to him.

Erwin is survived by his children – Amy Briggs (Steven Kowalczyk), Jonathan Briggs and Jennifer (Bruce) Chisholm; his eight grandchildren; and his and former wife – Patsy (Kriplean) Briggs. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister – Gail Simmons.

Erwin will be remembered for his distinguished service to his country, his curiosity and creativity, his adventurous spirit, and his enduring love for his family.
