Erwin Walker Obituary

Erwin "Butch" Leslie Walker Jr., an educator, Army veteran, and beloved family man, died on July 11, 2025 at the age of 82 at Brigham and Women's Hospital/Mass General from complications from myasthenia gravis.

Born in Laconia and raised in Plymouth, Butch made his home in Goffstown, NH. A graduate of Plymouth State University, he earned a Master's degree in Education from Boston University and an MBA from New Hampshire College. For 35 years at Goffstown High School, he taught business, bookkeeping, business law, how to use some of the first personal computers, and accounting. While at Goffstown High, he also brought the sport he cherished to the school by starting the golf team and coaching it for 40 years.

Butch was drafted into the US Army, and was stationed in Korea, where he was selected to serve Non-Officer Financial and Administrative functions. When asked about his service, he would say how it was important to be good at taking tests to get the job you want.

Butch had a life-long passion for sports and particularly golf. Always a balance of tenacious, humble, and confident, he was a skilled golfer with a low handicap that he kept in the single digits for nearly a half century. He was a Club Champ at Derryfield and the now defunct Goffstown Country Cub. Through skill or sheer luck, or a combination of both, he scored 5 holes-in-one, the same number that Phil Mickelson had while playing PGA tour events. Butch also was a dedicated volunteer for the New Hampshire Golf Association including leading the course rating and sloping process for over a decade.

Butch's favorite hobby was golf, but he also enjoyed the outdoors, spending time at Squam Lake, skiing, completing home projects, and time with family. He volunteered with the Boy Scouts and served as treasurer for Troop 99 in Goffstown for over two decades. In support of his wife Jean, he reluctantly hiked almost all the 48 4,000-footers in NH.

He was married to Jean (Miles) Walker, with whom he shared 59 years of marriage. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Glenn Walker of Rye, and his wife Elizabeth Fairchild, and Miles Walker of Laconia, and his wife Leslie Drescher. He was a devoted grandfather to Benjamin Walker and Samantha Walker. Butch also is survived by two siblings, Nat Moses of Ocala, FL and Roger Walker and his wife Debbie of Piedmont, SC. He is also survived by his brother-in-law William Miles and wife Helen of Goffstown and sister-in-law Margaret Eldridge and her husband Bruce of Sanbornton, three nieces, a nephew, extended family and many friends.

ARRANGEMENTS: A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the McDonough Golf Scholarship Foundation in his name or a charity of your choice. Assisting the family with arrangements is the Cremation Society of NH, Manchester.

Mr. Walker was a wonderful teacher that I had for a business law class at GHS. It proved to be a useful tool for reviewing specs and contracts for the line of work I went into. Mrs. Walker (Miles) and family I hope that you and your family are helped getting through your loss with the fond memories of the times you had together. Not too many of the old family names left in Grasmere. All our best and God Bless.

I have known Butch for most of our lives. We first met in Gorham as children( Butch never remembered this) playing together at his Grandparents( who were good friends of my parents) house. We reunited at Plymouth Teachers College in 1961 as members of the golf team and have been good friends ever since. We played many times in the State Father and Son tournament with our sons, always followed by a meal afterwards. Also, many other rounds were played together including trips to Arizona and Florida. After Butch could no longer play golf we enjoyed going out for breakfast. I will greatly miss him. Rest in peace good friend.
