Obituary published on Legacy.com by Schaetter Funeral Home - Comfort on Nov. 25, 2025.
Ethyleen Spenrath Flach was born in Comfort, Texas, one of three daughters born to Walter and Katie Spenrath. She grew up south of Comfort on the old Spenrath Ranch, now owned by Dusty and Norma Bruns (an interesting story there)
Ethyleen attended the Comfort Schools wherein her Senior Year, was a Forward on the Deer Basketball Team. She was chosen for the All-Tournament Team and was awarded a small Silver Basketball. Ethyleen was again chosen as Outstanding Player at the Mason tournament, and received a small Gold Basketball. And Ethyleen later went on to play in the State Tournament in Hillsboro. Truly a star player!
She graduated in 1945 and went to Business School. She worked for a time at the old Clasby's Café in Comfort, and in 1947 began working for School Superintendent Gerhard Petermann in the Comfort Schools. And she was honored when he asked her to coach the 9th and 10th grade Girl's Basketball!
On September 9, 1948, she married her best friend, LeRoy Flach. Together, they farmed and ranched a place on Cypress Creek west of town for many years. They had two children - Normagene and Rodney. Ethyleen was one of the leaders in the Cypress Creek Girls 4-H club, also serving on the Refreshment Committee of the PTA for several years. Both LeRoy and Ethyleen were long-time members of the Comfort Lodge, Hermann Sons.
After retiring from farm and ranch life in 1991, both LeRoy and Ethyleen moved into Comfort where they enjoyed eating lunch at the Comfort Golden Age Center and playing Bingo. LeRoy passed on in 1997.
Ethyleen volunteered at the Golden Age Center where she and others started making recycled greeting cards, and participating in arts and crafts work. For several years, she and Neil Bergmann also picked up meals in Boerne for the Center every Wednesday and delivered them to shut-ins.
She loved watching the Dallas Cowboys and the Spurs, especially Manu Ginobili. One of her favorite pastimes was watching her birds, hummingbirds being her favorite.
She lived alone until she turned 97, whereupon she moved to the Comfort Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
The family would like to thank the Comfort Nursing and Rehabilitation Staff and New Century Hospice for the loving care they provided.
Ethyleen was preceded in death by her husband LeRoy, her parents Walter and Katie Spenrath, and her sisters Velma Reeh and Mary Ann Moren.
Ethyleen is survived by her daughter Normagene, and husband Dusty Bruns of Comfort, and her son Rodney, and wife Jenny Flach, also of Comfort, grandchildren Melissa (Rich) Henderson of Cypress, Texas, Jimmy (Mandy) Bruns of Davidson, North Carolina, Beth (Luke) Pitts of College Station, Texas, Randy (Lindsay) Flach of Portland, Texas. Altogether, she had four grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
No service will be held as per her wishes. The family suggests donations in her memory be made to the Golden Age Center, Comfort Volunteer Fire Department, or to the
charity of your choice.
