Eugene Barkasy Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc. on Dec. 31, 2025.
Eugene Barkasy, affectionately known to so many in Dunmore as "Turtle," passed away on December 30 at the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center.

Born to George and Margaret (Lesso) Barkasy, Gene grew up in Dunmore and proudly graduated from Dunmore High School in 1963. Immediately after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy. From 1963–1966, he served aboard the U.S.S. Hissem and the U.S.S. Courtney as a Storekeeper Third Class. His service to his country remained a point of deep pride throughout his life.

Following his honorable discharge, Gene returned home and began a long and successful career as a salesman in the printing industry with AM Varityper. But his entrepreneurial spirit led him to forge his own path. He opened Turtle Computers in Dunmore, where he loved helping neighbors and local businesses with their computer repairs and needs. He was immensely proud to serve the community he cherished.

Gene's Dunmore roots were a source of lifelong joy. He stayed closely connected with his classmates and was a devoted supporter of his Dunmore High School class reunions. He was also a proud member of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church in Scranton and the VFW in Clarks Summit.

In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his sisters Sandra Barkasy and Elizabeth Toms; his brothers William and Richard; and his brother-in-law, William Toms.

Gene is survived by his daughters, Nicole Hanni and husband Joseph of Dunmore, and Danielle Gowarty and husband Edward of South Abington Township. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Sam and Louis Hanni, and Rita, Sophia, and Edward Gowarty; along with his brother George and wife Patricia Barkasy of Moosic.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff and nurses at the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center and Allied Hospice for their dedicated care and support.

The funeral services will be Saturday at 10am at St. Mary's Byzantine Church, 310 Mifflin Ave, Scranton. Friends may call at the church from 9am to the time of mass.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to United Cerebral Palsy of NEPA 425 Wyoming Avenue, Scranton, PA 18503.

Arrangements entrusted to Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc. 318 East Drinker St. Dunmore.
