Eugene “Gene” Gilbert, 84, of Sulphur, LA, passed away on December 21, 2024, at Harbor Hospice Care Facility. Gene was born on April 12, 1940, in Sulphur, LA, to Ovey and Emitile Gilbert. Gene served in the United States Marine Corp division from 1958-1962 where he attended the US Marine Division Equipment Operation School. After that time is when he joined the Internation Union of Operating Engineers, Local 406 as a heavy equipment operator which is where he finished out working his career until retirement in 2001. He currently was employed as a crossing guard with the CPSO at E. K. Key elementary and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 179.
Those left to cherish his loving memory are his wife of forty years, Linda Gilbert; daughters, Tina Simmons (Robert), Lisa Desormeaux (Randy), Pam Swinney (Mark), Missy Hastings (Steve Corbello); 12 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild. Gene was preceded in death by his parents; one son, James Lee Gilbert; brothers, Ray Lee Gilbert and Melvin Gilbert; and sister, Nita Navarre.
Services for Gene will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at Johnson Funeral Home in Sulphur at 11 AM. Burial will follow at Mimosa Pines South. The family will receive friends on Friday, December 27, 2024, at the funeral home, from 4-8 PM and resume on Saturday from 9 AM until the time of service.
