Eugene “Rusty” Gross passed peacefully from this life into eternal life on June 20, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family and the promises of his faith.

Born on May 30, 1955, Rusty dedicated 25 years of his life working as a coal miner—a job he not only performed with great pride, but one he genuinely loved. His hands were shaped by years of hard and honest work, and his heart was shaped by deep devotion—to his family, to his friends, and most of all, to Christ. He was a member and deacon at the Church of God in Christ Jesus. Rusty’s greatest joy was sharing life with his beloved wife of 52 years, Joy. Whether they were tending the garden side by side or speaking about the love and grace of Jesus, their bond was unshakable and their love unwavering. Together, they built a life rooted in faith, love, and family. He found joy in the simplest of moments: talking with his children, sharing stories of days gone by, and most especially, cherishing time with his precious granddaughter, Makenzie Joy—his “Love Bug.” One of his proudest joys was that Makenzie shared his birthday. Every year he would tell her, “Love Bug, you are my most favorite birthday present.” They spent many special days together taking basket-making classes, crafting each one with care and love. Those memories will forever live on in the weave of every basket and the warmth of every story.

Rusty also loved the outdoors. He found peace in the mountains—hunting, fishing, and carving beautiful rocking chairs and dough bowls from the very trees he gathered himself. In those quiet moments among the trees, he found time to talk to God.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fariston and Verda Gross; his dear sisters,Norma Bowling (Larry and Chad), Imogene North (Allen and Tim), and Margie Lewis(Missy and Owen Baker). Rusty is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Joy; his daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Adam Baker; his son, Bryan Gross; his cherished granddaughter, Makenzie Joy Baker, one brother Harold Wayne Gross (Norma), brother-in-law Larry Lewis and his two sisters, Helen Smith (Hurlen) and Maxine Baker, whose steadfast love and strength have been a source of great comfort and support during this difficult time. Each one carries his strength, wisdom, and warmth in their hearts.

One of Rusty’s favorite scripture was Isaiah 40:31: “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk and not faint.” Though his earthly body grew tired, his spirit never did. And today, we take comfort in knowing that he rests, free from pain, in the arms of Jesus.

A celebration of Rusty’s life will be held on Monday, June 23, 2025, at Dwayne Walker Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m. The funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by interment at the Baker Family Cemetery at The Church of God in Christ Jesus. Rusty’s life was a testimony of quiet strength, unwavering faith, and deep,enduring love. He leaves behind a legacy not just of words, but of a life well-lived and hearts forever touched by his kindness
