Vernell Lewis, a beloved member of her community, passed away on August 28, 2025, at the Wells Hospice Center in Hazard, Kentucky. She was born on March 17, 1936, in Leslie County, Kentucky, to John Lewis and Emily Turner Lewis. Vernell was known for her friendly and warm personality, which left a lasting impression on all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Vernell dedicated a significant part of her life to her career at Duro Manufacturing in Covington, Kentucky, where she retired after many years of service. Her work ethic and commitment earned her the respect of her colleagues and friends alike.
A devoted family member, Vernell cherished the time she spent with her loved ones. She is survived by her brothers, Eugene Lewis (Lexine) and Billy Ray Lewis, as well as her sisters, Faye Roberts, Elizabeth Roberts (Victor), and Lois Brock (Johnny). She was also blessed with a large extended family, which includes 43 nieces and nephews, 67 great nieces and nephews, 94 great great nieces and nephews, and 14 great great great nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss her dearly.
Vernell was preceded in death by her loving and cherished husband, Ben Lewis, and her siblings, Evelene Baker, Hurlen Lewis, Martha Woods, Cinda Joseph, Paul Lewis, Clifford Lewis, Cleavon Lewis, and Joyce Lewis. Their memories, along with her legacy of warmth and kindness, will continue to inspire all who knew her. Ms. Vernell was an active member of the Big Fork Church of God in Yeaddiss, Kentucky and will be greatly missed by the church.
Visitation will be held on August 31, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Walker Funeral Home in Hyden, KY, with the funeral service to follow at 2:00 PM.
Vernell Lewis will be remembered not just for her accomplishments, but for the love and joy she brought into the lives of others. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of those she touched throughout her life.
