Eugene Kenny Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Curvin K. Council Funeral Home on Dec. 9, 2025.
Professor Eugene "Gene" Kenny
June 4, 1938 – December 4, 2025

Professor Eugene Kenny transitioned from this life into the presence of the Lord on December 4, 2025, at the age of 87. Born in a small close knit community, Delmar, MD, on June 4, 1938, to Agnes West (Kenney) and Matthew Kenney, Eugene's early years were shaped by both loss and extraordinary love. After the passing of his biological mother when he was only three years old, his father later married Lauretta Kenny, who lovingly raised Eugene as her own son.

From a young age, Eugene demonstrated a remarkable curiosity and intellect-especially in the field of chemistry. His talent quickly caught the attention of his high school teachers, setting the foundation for an academic journey that would influence countless lives. His dedication earned him a full scholarship to Delaware State University, where he studied chemistry with distinction. Eugene continued his studies through a prestigious fellowship at Boston University. As one of the few minorities in his academic program during that era, he faced significant challenges. Yet, with steadfast discipline and faith, he excelled.

His career as an educator became the heartbeat of his life. Eugene moved to Connecticut, where he spent many years teaching and influencing generations of students. At Gateway Community College, he served as Head of the Math & Science Department, leading with vision, excellence, and compassion. Eugene also taught as an adjunct professor at several colleges and universities, including Yale and Quinnipiac-roles that filled him with pride and gratitude. He delighted in sharing that he had taught chemistry at some of the nation's most respected institutions.

New Haven became more than a home for Eugene; it was where he met the love of his life, Mildred. They were married in 1962 and their union was blessed with one son, Eugene "Kenny" Kenney Jr., whose memory he cherished deeply. Eugene and Mildred built a life anchored in love, faith, service, and commitment.

Beyond academia, Eugene lived a life of brotherhood, leadership, and faith. He was a proud and active member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and a dedicated Mason. His spiritual devotion was evident in his many years of service as Deacon Chair at Christian Temple Baptist Church, where he guided and uplifted his church community with unwavering commitment.

One of Eugene's earliest desires was to have a sister-a prayer answered when he was 17 years old. Five years later, another blessing arrived in the form of a younger brother. Eugene took great pride in being the eldest sibling, setting a high standard and always reminding his sister and brother that with hard work and God, all things are possible. His influence shaped their lives, offering encouragement, wisdom, and love that will remain with them forever.

Eugene is preceded in death by his parents, Matthew and Lauretta Kenney; his biological mother, Agnes West; and his beloved son, Eugene "Kenny" Kenny Jr.

He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Mildred Kenney; his loving sister, Dr. Marguerite Kenney Hall; his brother, Cyril S. Kenney, and sister-in-love, Stacy Kenney; his grandchildren; his great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, former students, colleagues, and dear friends.

Eugene's life was a testament to the power of education, faith, resilience, and love. His legacy lives on in the many hearts he touched, the students he inspired, and the family who will forever honor his name.

A Celebration of Mr. Kenny's life and legacy will be held on Friday, December 12, 2025, at 11:00 A.M. at Christian Tabernacle Baptist Church, 425 Newhall Street, Hamden, followed by interment at Beaverdale Memorial Park. An Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity service will begin at 9:30 A.M. at the church. Family and friends may also attend a viewing at the church from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M.

The Celebration of life will be livestreamed via the church's website at https://youtube.com/@ctbcofficial?si=qxOhfxfWeRzbaDBy
