Courtland "Eugene" Kent, age 58, a lifelong resident of Marianna, passed away on October 13, 2025, at Gulf Coast Medical Center.
Eugene was born on July 8, 1967, in Marianna, Florida, to Iva and Trudy Kent. He graduated from Marianna High School and later earned his bachelor's degree in business from the University of West Florida. Throughout his working years, Eugene was employed at the Dozier Boys School and the Ice River Springs bottling plant.
A lifelong fan of science fiction, fantasy, and horror, Eugene found joy in stories that stretched the imagination. He was an avid reader and a familiar face at his favorite bookstore, A New Chapter: Books & More, where he loved spending time and taking part in the many activities offered there. A true cat lover, Eugene rescued and cared for numerous cats over the years, giving each one a safe and loving home. Halloween was his favorite time of year-he delighted in the decorations, movies, and playful spirit of the season.
Eugene also loved gathering with his daughter and close friends to play Dungeons & Dragons, where his creativity and humor shone just as brightly as his love for storytelling.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Hunter Kent; and his brothers, Andy and David Kent.
He is survived by his daughter, Kaitlin Kent and her fiancé, Marco; his sister, Nina Kelley; his granddaughter, Elena Velazquez; his uncle, Buddy Hall; his two sister-in-laws, Barbara and Denise Kent; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Eugene will be remembered for his boundless imagination, his gentle heart, and the way he made every creature-human or feline-feel at home in his world.
No services are planned at this time. Arrangements are entrusted to the Lambe Family at Marianna Chapel Funeral Home.
