Eugene Lovejoy Obituary Eugene "Gene" Lovejoy, 91, of Ashtabula, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones.
He was born on August 13, 1933, in
Ashtabula, Ohio, the son of Ledrue and Helen (Tinker) Lovejoy.
After graduating from High School, Gene enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he proudly served his country for three years. Gene married Shirley Throckmorton on September 1, 1955, and together they built a loving home and raised two children in Plymouth Township. Gene and Shirley threw themselves into their community by joining the Plymouth Volunteer Fire Department and experiencing lasting friendships with their neighbors. Gene was a man of many talents as he built improvements to their home, repaired cars, and upgraded the swampy, empty lot next door with a large barn that housed his boat and other treasures. He had inherited a love for woodworking from his father and spent countless hours in his workshop. One of his accomplishments was building a custom camping trailer, which his family used on many hunting and camping trips. That camper allowed his family to experience hunting out west and other places. He and four other buddies built a hunting cabin, called 5 Spot, in the hills of PA from the ground up. 5 Spot is still standing. An outdoorsman at heart, Gene found great joy in nature. He loved camping, hunting, and bass fishing, often organizing family trips that created lasting memories.
He was known for his strong work ethic, integrity, and dedication to his coworkers and profession. Gene accepted retirement from R.M.l. in 1992, when Shirley was faced with terminal cancer. The family had shared many joyful years together until Shirley's passing on October 14, 1992, when Gene was crushed almost beyond repair.
God again blessed Gene as he found love and companionship with Marilyn Kreisher, with whom he could share his passion for travel, fishing, and family. He had met her through the hospital Chaplin who had helped each of them separately through their grieving process after they each lost a spouse to cancer. That clever Chaplin married Gene and Marilyn on August 23, 1996, and Marilyn joined Gene on many adventures. His adventurous spirit led him to travel extensively, visiting six countries and enjoying 33 cruises over the years. The couple became snowbirds and made their home in both Florida and Ohio, but while in Florida they were immersed in the small community at their church. They developed forever friendships there that endured even as they reluctantly made Ohio their permanent home last year. Phone calls to Marilyn and Gene assured them they were not forgotten and thought of often.
Gene is survived by his loving wife Marilyn Lovejoy; children: David (Thirza) and Bradley; stepchildren: Debra and Richard; grandchildren: Christina, Joshua, Jacob, Elizabeth, and Rachel; and several great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by first wife, Shirley Throckmorton and his parents.
Eugene was laid to rest at Maple Grove Cemetery in Plymouth Township in a camouflaged casket after military honors.
