Eugene Owen Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Walnut Lawn Funeral Home - Springfield on Mar. 16, 2026.
Eugene Owen, 94, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2026, in Springfield, Missouri. Born on May 26, 1931, in Sevierville, Tennessee, Eugene was one of four children born to Clarence and Addie Owen. He grew up on a picturesque working farm nestled in the heart of the Smoky Mountains, where he developed a deep appreciation for nature and hard work.

After graduating high school, Eugene embarked on a short motorcycle trip to Texas with his brother Carl, before beginning his lifelong career in the military. Eugene proudly served with both the Army and the Air Force, dedicating his life to service and duty. His military career took him across the globe, with assignments in Japan, Germany, Greece, Atwater, California; Wichita Falls, Texas; Denver, Colorado; and ultimately retiring in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Eugene had a sharp mind and an innate curiosity that made him excel at his work with biomedical equipment. He took great pride in understanding how medical devices operated and ensuring they functioned properly to help others.

Eugene's faith was central to his life. A devoted follower of Jesus Christ, he served God faithfully through teaching Bible studies, participating in mission trips, working with Prison Fellowship ministries, and serving as a jail chaplain. He loved studying the Bible and memorized countless verses that he would quote whenever needed. His passion for learning about God's Word was evident to all who knew him.

In addition to his faith and career accomplishments, Eugene found joy in many hobbies. He loved fishing and was always ready at a moment's notice to head to the nearest body of water-whether it was a small pond or a scenic lake nestled in the mountains or even Canada. He also enjoyed cutting wood, planting gardens, traveling to new places, and spending time with family. Eugene cherished every moment spent with his loving wife and two daughters. One of the highlights of his life was the birth of his only grandchild, Sydney. He delighted in playing games she invented or joining her for outdoor adventures like feeding cows or taking drives together.

Eugene's legacy is one of faithfulness-to God, family, country-and an enduring love for life's simple pleasures. His memory will be treasured by those who knew him.

May his memory bring comfort and inspiration to all who were blessed to share in his remarkable journey. A Funeral will be held on March 23, 2026, starting at 11 AM at Walnut lawn Funeral Home 2001 W Walnut Lawn St. A short visitation will be held before the service, starting at 10:30 AM. A committal service and military honors will be held at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery following the service at 1 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Eugene's honor to prison fellowship at PFI.org or the national fish and wildlife foundation at support.nwf.org.
