In Loving Memory of Eugene Donald Sanner

Gene Donald Sanner, born June 12, 1947, in Erie, passed away peacefully in his home on February 20, 2026 surrounded by his family.

He was the beloved son of Donald and Charlotte Sanner and a proud graduate of East High School. He continued his education at Columbia University, where his curiosity about the world and heart for service only grew stronger.

In 1969, Gene joined the Peace Corps, a decision that would shape the rest of his life. His journey took him to Brazil, where he not only served with dedication but also found the love of his life, Maria, whom he married there. Together they built a beautiful life and family.

Maira had a son Jose Aristotle da Penha whom Gene lovingly raised as his own, embracing him fully. To Gene, family was defined by love, commitment and presence not simply blood. He was a steady, caring father figure whose guidance and devotion was his biggest accomplishment.

While living in Brazil, Gene and Maria welcomed their daughter, Carla Zelenak, who now resides in Erie with her husband, Chris Zelenak. Gene was a proud and devoted grandfather to Meghan and Brian Zelenak, who brought him immeasurable joy. Gene was preceded in death by his sister, Carrie Sanfilippo and brother, Joseph Sanner; also survived by his sisters, Mary Messina, Christianne Popoff, Connie Elwinger and Jenne Senator and brother, Charles Sanner.

Gene spent more than 45 years in Brazil before returning to the United States. He carried with him a deep appreciation for culture, community, and connection. He was an avid fan of the Cleveland Browns and the New York Yankees, cheering them on faithfully through every season.

Above all, Gene was a generous, kind, and loving family man whom one could not help but love. He was a lifelong Democrat who stood firmly against injustice and believed deeply in fairness, dignity, and compassion for all people.

His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the lives he touched, and the example he set - of service, love, conviction, and unwavering loyalty to those he held dear.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered. Private funeral arrangements are being handled by the William D. Elkin Funeral Home, 65 S. Lake Street, North East, PA. Condolences may be sent to elkinfh.com.
