Eugene O. (Gene) Scholz Passed away peacefully on Sunday February 2nd, 2025 at Rocky Knoll facility in Plymouth. Gene was born August 4th, 1936 in rural Random Lake, Wisconsin, the son of the late Oscar and Lydia (Wimmler) Scholz. He attended St. John's Elementary School in Sherman Center and Random Lake High School, class of 1954. His active naval service began at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and the Far East, aboard the USS Renshaw from 1955-1957, serving as Signalman/Quartermaster and also the US Naval Reserves until 1961.
On February 28, 1959, he married the love of his life, Joan Bernice Schmitz, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Dubuque, Iowa and honeymooned in the Upper Peninsula. They celebrated 65 years of marriage in 2024.
Over the years Gene attended several technical colleges to further his education in electricity, electronics and police science. Gene was employed at Lanser Electric (Belgium/Port Washington), Household Utilities (Kiel) for 25 years, Kiel Police Department (22 years) and Wisconsin Power & Light (Sheboygan) retiring in 1994. In retirement, he worked for Tag's Appliance (Sheboygan) and was a volunteer driver for Kiel Senior Center. His avocation was officiating semi-pro and WIAA sports for the Calumet County Officials Association, being a charter member, reffing/umpiring and calling balls & strikes for over 40 years, all across Wisconsin.
Gene enjoyed his grandchildren immensely along with playing, coaching and watching sports, the Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers, and the Wisconsin Badgers and even escaping on weekends camping with their faithful friends group. He played golf in Kiel Industrial Quit Qui Oc league for over 40 years. His travels took him to 47 states and they enjoyed wintering in Arizona.
He was a man of great faith and was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in New Holstein for over 50 years serving in numerous elected positions and committees, and enjoyed Bible Study, the men's choir and other choral activities. He was the last surviving building committee member.
Survivors include his wife, Joan, of 65 years; four children, Mark (special friend Kathleen McCarthy) Scholz, Joy (Dean) Baer, Todd (Cindy) Scholz and Barry (Chris) Scholz. Ten grandchildren, Alex Scholz (Alyssa), Erica (Matthew) Stekel, Jessica (Evan) Ronayne, Austin (Masen) Enyeart, 1st Lt. USMC Dylan Enyeart (Loren), Nicholas Scholz, August Scholz (Lexi), Collin (Ally) Scholz, Adam Scholz (Madison), Ava Scholz (Conner) and step-grandchild, Matthew Baer. To celebrate his 88th birthday, he was able to meet their first great-grandson, Duncan Ronayne in August 2024. He is also survived by many Godchildren, nieces and nephews.
He is further survived by his eight brother and sister in-laws: Shirley Wasmer, Romilda Schmitz, Anna Mae Schmitz, Glenroy (MarJean) Schmitz, Leroy Schmitz, Allen Schmitz, Carol Joas and Linda Wagner. He was preceded in death by his parents; Oscar (Lydia) Scholz, father and mother-in-law Clarence (Josephine) Schmitz; by two sisters and their spouses, Margaret (William) Mielke and Deloris (Walter) Meyer; brother and sister-in-laws; Janet Schmitz, Joe Wasmer, Kenneth (Aggie) Schmitz, Donald Schmitz, Mary Schmitz, Gerald Schmitz, Marvin Schmitz, MarJean Schmitz, William Joas and Alan Wagner.
Funeral Services for Gene will be held at 11:30am on Monday February 10, 2025 at Zion Lutheran Church (1702 Van Buren, New Holstein) A time of visitation will take place at the church on Monday from 9:00am until 11:00am when there will be brief family rites before the services at 11:30am.
Gene would like to thank the countless healthcare organizations and thorough care from doctors, nurses and healthcare providers through the years, and lastly Kiel Ambulance Service, Calumet Medical Center, Ascension Mercy Medical Center in Oshkosh, Veteran's Administration, Rocky Knoll Care Center and Sharon Richardson Hospice.
