Eunice Pittman Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Inc. - Norfolk Chapel on Mar. 8, 2024.
Eunice Louise "Cookie" Pittman died on Wednesday, February 28 at the age of 97 while living at Karolwood Gardens with family members by her side and holding her hand.
Born on Staten Island, New York, Cookie is the daughter of the late Augustus Frederick Pittman Sr. and Eunice Helena Deibert Pittman.
Growing up, the family moved around quite a bit as Cookie's father was a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Coast Guard. From Staten Island to Pascagoula to Marquette to Cape May and finally to Norfolk where he retired and the family made home over the next eighty plus years. It was while living in Marquette where Cookie earned her moniker. Aunts living in the New York and New Jersey areas would mail boxes of cookies to the family. Cookie would often greet the mail man eagerly hoping that another box of deliciousness would find its way into her hands. Over time the mail man affectionately started calling her "Cookie."
Upon graduating from Maury High School in Norfolk, Cookie applied to and was offered admission to attend the College of William and Mary. Much to her father's chagrin, she turned away from college life choosing instead to stay home and help raise and take care of her sister, Judy. Cookie's commitment to family never wavered and was steadfast up until the day she died.
After high school, Cookie began her career path as a contractor with the Fifth District Coast Guard Personnel Services Center headquartered in Portsmouth, Virginia. Starting out as a supply clerk she worked her way through the system and eventually became a Certification Officer and retired as a Marine Safety Officer (G12). While working as a contractor, Cookie and several co-workers were instrumental in forming and opening the Guardian Federal Credit Union - Portsmouth office. There is no doubt that Cookie was one of a kind, very smart, very opinioned and an inspiration to women everywhere.
In retirement, Cookie never really took her foot off the gas pedal, volunteering her time and skill sets unselfishly with numerous organizations. She served as treasurer for Larchmont United Methodist Church and its associated pre-school and served as treasurer and chaired the board of directors for the Norfolk Little Theater. Additionally, she volunteered and performed various duties for the old Kirn Memorial Library, the Virginia Opera and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra.
In addition to her parents, Cookie was predeceased by her brother, Augustus Frederick Pittman Jr. (late wife Patricia "Patty" Jean Hopkins Pittman) and beloved sister, Judith Ann Pittman.
Cookie is survived by her sister, Marion H. Force (late husband Stephen) of Colorado; nephews; nieces; cousins; long time friends; Larchmont United Methodist Church; Intrepid Hospice Care; in-home care givers; and certainly all of her friends and staff at The Talbot on Granby and Karolwood Gardens. To the sky and back Aunt Cookie, we will forever remember your love of family, sharp wit, infectious laugh and quirky sayings. The world has lost a wonderful personality and a truly beautiful person.
Celebrations of Life for both Cookie and her sister Judy will be held in the chapel at Larchmont United Methodist Church on Saturday, May 4 at 12:00 p.m. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.hdoliver.com.
