Zula Faye Martin Morton, 70, was born October 31, 1951, to Max and Nathalie Martin of Maysville, OK. She unexpectedly passed away of pneumonia on December 7, 2021.
Faye grew up in Maysville and graduated valedictorian from Stratford High School in 1969. She graduated from Oklahoma State University (OSU) in 1973 with a BA in Family Relations and Childhood Development and taught at Red Rock Public Schools for 4 years prior to attending the University of Oklahoma College of Law. While in law school, she was selected as a member of the Oklahoma Law Review and graduated with her Juris Doctor in 1981. After a few years in private practice, she began her 37 year career as an attorney for the Oklahoma Department of Securities and ultimately retired as General Counsel. During the course of her career, she was involved in all areas of securities regulation, was very active with the Oklahoma County Bar Association, was heavily engaged in the OKC women lawyers group, and was instrumental in drafting the rules to implement the Oklahoma Uniform Securities Act of 2004. In 2019, she was awarded the Mona Salyer Lambird Spotlight Award recognizing women who distinguished themselves in the legal profession. She was known on a statewide and national basis for her knowledge of the securities laws and was especially known for her "rulemaking prowess" within the office.
She met her beloved future husband, Jim, while attending OSU, and they were later married on September 2, 1978, just 2 weeks after Faye began law school. On July 8, 1982, they welcomed their cherished son, Jake Morton. She was a fantastic working mom and always made sure to attend all her son's activities. Faye also was fully engaged in all activities with her church, from teaching Sunday school and bible classes, sponsoring youth trips, and opening her home to the youth group or anyone in need. She often made time to visit the sick or shut-ins to make sure they had a good hug and knew they were loved. Her deep love of and exceptional talent for singing was obvious from an early age and spanned her entire life; it was a special treat for the multitude of friends and family she called to sing "Happy Birthday to You." Faye was an avid OSU fan and a season ticket holder of the Thunder since their arrival in OKC.
Even in the midst of tragedy, Faye maintained her faith in God, her love for others and overall optimism. She was a survivor of the Oklahoma City bombing, and despite her own injuries her first thought was to assist her coworkers. She became a member of the state employee bombing survivor communication committee charged with facilitating communications between agencies impacted by the bombing and helping those in need to connect with services and resolve challenges.
Faye enjoyed life to the fullest, and vacations with her husband always involved visiting family and friends. She cherished every moment with her husband, Jim, and was incredibly proud of her son, Jake. One of her greatest pleasures was spending time with her grandchildren, who she adored beyond measure. Above all, she loved Henry's beaming personality, Lucy's energy and sass, Connor's wit, and Max's heart. When an in-person visit was not possible, she found constant opportunity to Facetime with them and loved every second.
She is survived by her adoring husband Jim Morton of Choctaw, OK; her loving son Jake Morton and wife, Katie, of Castle Rock, CO; four grandchildren, Max, Connor, Lucy, and Henry; her sister, Iona Martin, of Oklahoma City; brother Max Martin and wife Candace of Ardmore; brother-in law Danny Fogle and wife Joy of Oklahoma City; aunt Berniece Dykeman of Midwest City; Jim and Marge Morton, father-in-law and mother-in-law; Becky Little, sister-in-law; Patti and Reuben Gutierrez, sister-in-law and brother-in-law; nephews Derrell Fogle, Daren Martin, Derek Martin, Lt Col Jim Gutierrez and David Little; nieces Deedra Fogle, Melanie Hogg, Alicia Emsley and LoriAnn Gutierrez, and a host of other family. She is preceded in death by her mother and father, maternal grandparents, Jake and Zula Dykeman, and Jim and Honor Martin, her sister Kayron Fogle and niece Lisa Fogle.
