Faye Rainey Thomas

In Loving Memory

Faye Rainey Thomas, known as Edna Faye in her hometown and Grammy Faye to her family, went home to Jesus on Saturday, January 24, 2026. Edna Faye Simons was born August 7, 1946, in Austin, TX, to Mary Alice (Friar) Simons and Edward Dexter Simons. The family moved to Utopia, TX when Faye was in elementary school. No matter where life led her, Faye considered Utopia her hometown and treasured her lifelong friendships there.

Faye's first career was in emergency medicine. She was instrumental in the creation of the Utopia Volunteer Emergency Medical Service in the early 1970s. She went on to be a force for quality health in rural areas across Texas. She was honored for her dedication many times, including an appointment by Governor Ann Richards to the Center for Rural Health Initiatives and being named as an inaugural member of the Texas Ambulance Association Hall of Fame.

Following her EMS career, Faye joined the business office at Second Baptist Church on Woodway. Faye was honored and blessed to work and worship with her Second Baptist family for many years. Sadly, health issues forced her to retire from her position at Second, but she continued to treasure the prayers, love, and support Second Baptist provided throughout her life.

Faye enjoyed cooking, gardening, and spending time with her beloved and adored grandchildren. She spent time rooting for the Texas Aggies, the Houston Texans, and especially, her favorite Houston Astros.

Faye is preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Ed Simons; her sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ann and Paul Coffman; and her youngest daughter, Leigh Rainey Ellis. Faye is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dexter and Heidi Rainey of Vanderpool, TX; her daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Pat Henney of Katy, TX; son-in-law, Andy Ellis and bonus daughter, Amanda Austin-Ellis, of Cypress, TX; seven grandchildren, Lara and Emily Henney, Meghan Rainey Adams (husband, Mason), Colton Rainey; Jack, Abby, and Sam Ellis; and numerous cousins, friends, and loved ones.

While we will all miss Faye terribly, we take comfort in knowing that she is now free from the confusion and pain of Lewy Body Dementia. She is safe in the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The family wishes to thank the love and care given to Faye by the lovely team at The Village of Gleannloch Farms and by the nurses and caregivers at Heart to Heart Hospice.

Faye's Celebration of Life will be Saturday, February 28 at 11 am, at Second Baptist Church - Woodway Campus, 6400 Woodway, Houston, TX 77057.
