Ferrol Clyde Miner was born in
Jefferson, Iowa on December 20, 1941 in the home of his maternal grandparents, Walter and Irene Wright. His parents, Glen and Charlotte lived on a farm in the Grand Junction area. Ferrol passed away on July 22, 2025 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa at the age of 83 years.
Ferrol grew up here attending Grand Junction school until he was in eighth grade and his parents moved to Jamaica. Riding horses was his love in his younger years and according to Ferrol, he had the fastest horse in the area. Many nights were spent riding at Spring Lake State Park with his older brother Harold, Keith Hoskinson and Eddie Davis. Many memorable moments.
Ferrol reached his adult size when he was in eighth grade so he was the biggest in his class. He loved all sports and was sad that Jamaica did not have football. He started varsity as a ninth grader in both basketball and baseball. He played baseball with the Jamaica town team. Ferrol was an all around good athlete.
Ferrol graduated from Jamaica High School in 1960 and immediately started barber school in Des Moines. He came home to his parents farm every weekend to either help in the fields or give family and friends haircuts. Ferrol married Sandra Hollar in 1960 and they lived in Des Moines while Ferrol was attending barber school and later his apprenticeship which was eighteen months after completion of barber school. Ferrol and Sandra had three children all born at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Shelly, Sheila and Jeff.
Ferrol really disliked living in the city and in 1966 he bought a barber shop in Jefferson. His first shop was in what was then the Arcade Building. When that building sold he was forced to relocate and ran the shop at 112 South Wilson until he retired in 2011. Many friends and good memories came to this place of business.
Ferrol was very active in the Jaycees, even performing a line dance at a community event. He served as Cub Scout leader and was President of the girls softball league that he and Dick Draisey organized. He umpired at the Little League Park about every night of the week during the years that his children were participating.
Ferrol had a great love of the outdoors and this includes fishing, hunting and any other outdoor activity.
He had some great fishing trips to Alaska, Michigan, Northern Canada, Minnesota, and Arkansas. He and his brother-in-law drove to Alaska and toured for one month. Ferrol accompanied Shelly and her family and Sheila and Mitchell on a cruise in Alaska. He enjoyed the quiet and fishing in the pond on Shelly and Johns acreage.
Ferrol was preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Charlotte; brother, Harold Miner; and younger brother David Miner his in laws, Roy Mutt, and Rosie Hollar. He is survived by his wife Sandra Miner; his children: Shelly (John) Wong, Sheila Miner, and Jeff Miner; his brother, Dan Miner; grandkids: Kaitlyn, Chelsea, David, Jenna, Graeme, Mitchell, Ellie, and Savannah; great grandkids: John, Henry, Charlotte, and Alma.
