Floyd Vincent Dimick was born in Chamberlain, South Dakota on July 17, 1931 to Hiram and Tillie (Mlady) Dimick. Floyd grew up and spent all his life on the family farm that was homesteaded in 1883. Floyd attended grade school in Academy and graduated from Platte High School in 1949. He then enlisted in the US Army on April 17, 1952 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and served as a welder and mechanic in an engineering battalion until his honorable discharge on March 23, 1954 at Ft Sheridan, Illinois. After his discharge he attended South Dakota State University on the GI-Bill from 1954-1958 and graduated with a degree in Animal Husbandry. While at SDSU he enjoyed showing cattle and participating in FFA and the Little International program.
Floyd loved the farm and the animals on the farm. As a young man, he excelled in 4-H receiving several ribbons at the Charles Mix County Fair. The love of cattle was a common theme his whole life. He worked with his cattle until 2022 when at 91 and because of failing health, Floyd had to sell his cow herd. With the help of his many neighbors and close to 40 ATV's they rounded up Floyd's 300 head to load and sell. Even at the last Floyd wanted to keep the younger cows and calves on the farm. Floyd enjoyed having coffee at Dakota Food & Fuel and the old Platte COOP. He served on both the Twin Buttes Telephone Company and Lake George Township Boards.
Floyd's other love was his wife of 54 years Karen. They were introduced with the help of friends and within two weeks they knew they were meant for each other. Floyd married Karen LeAnne Johnson on October 2, 1971 at the Lake Madison Lutheran Church in Madison, South Dakota. Floyd and Karen lived on the farm and liked to travel to Floyd's Army reunion across the United States and go and visit Karen's family.
Floyd passed away at the Avera Platte Healthcare Center on November 15, 2025 at 94 years of age with his loving wife Karen and his dear friend Tim Naasz by his side.
Floyd is survived by his wife Karen and nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends.
Floyd is preceded in death by his parents Hiram and Tillie Dimick and his in-laws Roy and Lillie Johnson.
