Fortunata Mendes Obituary

Fidjinha Chinha was born in the rural village of Portela, the beloved daughter of a woman affectionately known as Chinha - a strong, independent woman who earned her living through farming and livestock.

From an early age, Fidjinha reflected the same independence and talent she inherited from her mother. A devoted mother to her two children, Huguinho and Coia, she spent her childhood and youth in Portela. With her gifted hands, she lovingly sewed exquisite dresses for the girls in her community, who would proudly wear them on dance nights, dazzling everyone in garments crafted by this exceptional artist.

Years later, Fidjinha moved to Ribeira Ilhéu, dedicating herself wholeheartedly to raising her children until she emigrated to the United States. Her life was rooted in love and commitment - to her family, her children's education, and the friendships she held dear. Even after emigrating, she divided her time between the United States and Cape Verde so she could remain close to Huguinho and Coia.

Her love extended far beyond her biological children. She was the nurturing mother to Barbosa, Adelaide and Virgílio, who carry immense gratitude for all they experienced by her side and a longing that has already begun to weigh heavily on their hearts.

Fortunata Mendes - our Fidjinha - had a heart without measure. She was a woman of deep faith, loyal friendship, and boundless generosity. Her home was more than a dwelling; it was a place of sharing, conversation, music, and unity. Anyone who entered felt an immediate sense of belonging, as though they had always been part of her family. Fidjinha was also deeply devoted to preserving her culture. Following in her mother's footsteps, she served for many years as festeira (organizer) of the cherished traditional celebration of Nho Santo António and the Reinado. She welcomed neighbors, friends and acquaintances with joy and open arms. Her hospitality was simple yet profound - a piece of bread, a glass of water, a seat at her table - offered with warmth and sincerity. Her passing leaves a deep void in the cultural life of Mosteiros, for with her departure, a part of its heritage grew dimmer.

We also remember today those who went before her: her brother Alfredo and her sisters Adelaide and Maria. We believe they will welcome her into the glory of God, to the place of peace where they now rest.

Her life was one of love, service, and grace. She will be remembered always - not only for the beauty she created with her hands, but for the goodness she carried in her soul. She leaves us memories that will never fade and lessons we will carry forever.

Rest in peace, dear Fidjinha, in the presence of God. Here on earth, you will live on forever in the hearts of all who knew and loved you.
