Frances Elizabeth (Weyhrich) Brummels, the oldest child of Edward and Anna Weyhrich (Scheuttler), was born at home near Randolph on November 18, 1922. She was baptized and confirmed at Hope Lutheran Church at McLean Nebraska.
Frances was raised on the family farm near Randolph and graduated from McLean High School in 1940. She attended Grand Island Business College for one year. After college, she moved to Omaha and worked at the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy freight office. It was during this time she perfected her art of letter writing as she wrote to her fiance' five or six times a week. To this day, all of her family remembers eagerly looking forward to receiving a card and their own handwritten letter from Grandma.
In August of 1945, her fiance' Vernon Brummels returned from serving 3½ years overseas during WWIl and they were married on September 28, 1945 at St John's Lutheran in Randolph. They rented farms near Randolph and raised their family of seven children. Before the family moved to her parent's ranch south of Ewing in 1966, the two oldest had already graduated from Randolph. The next two boys graduated from Clearwater before the family bought and moved to their current farm on the Elkhorn River just north of Ewing in 1972. The youngest three boys graduated from Ewing. Vernon and Frances were members of Concordia Lutheran church in Clearwater.
Everyone loved to visit Grandma on the farm. For many years she raised chickens and had a large garden. She was a wonderful cook and made the best cinnamon rolls. She loved her family dearly and looked forward to any visitors and, with her large family, she had many. You would always have coffee and probably a cookie or two if you came to visit. She would have something new to tell you every time you visited. She was also an avid reader, did beautiful embroidery work and loved to do puzzles.
Frances is survived by her five sons and daughters-in-law: Jim of Wayne, NE, Rodney (Jane) of Osmond, NE, Roger (Lori) of Norfolk, NE, Ed (Sandy) of Osmond, NE, Dan (Jo) of Ewing, NE, Lynette Brummels of Waukee, IA and Linda Brummels of Winside, NE. She has 24 grandchildren: Grant (Andrea Brummels, Erika (Jim) Shepherd, Catherine (Chris) O'Brien, Rebecca (Kurt) Bravo, Rachael (Mike) Barlow, Zeke (Molly) Brummels, Liz (Jake) Stewart, Seth (Jamie) Brummels, Joshua (Jennifer) Brummels, Sydney (Michael) Lau, Morgan Brummels, Jennifer (Tim) Carlisle, Chris (Kristi) Brummels, Ben (Staci) Brummels, Jeremy (Mandy) Brummels, Jason (Sarah) Brummels, Chad Brummels, Kari (Tyler) Tunink, Emily (Kyle) Schumacher, Blake Brummels, Leyna Brummels, Kelsey (Chris) Mailloux, Trevor Brummels, and Ryan Brummels and over 40 great and great-great grandchildren.
