On the evening of April 14, 2024, our beloved mother, Frances Lee Fu, passed away peacefully in her home in Chicago, surrounded by family and friends. Frances (Li Xing Zhao) was born on September 6, 1924, in Qingdao, China, to Li Huai Xiu and Liu Zheng Yi, as recorded in the Li Genealogy. She was the second of their four children and their only daughter. Frances met her future husband, John E. Fu, while studying at Fu Jen Catholic University in Beijing. In 1950, they fled the Communist regime and came to the United States, traveling by boat from Hong Kong to San Francisco. They joined her brother-in-law, Rev. John B. Fu, in Chicago. Frances attended Barat College and Northwestern University, earning a master's degree in microbiology. After settling in Logan Square, she worked as a pharmacy technician, taught seventh and eighth grade math and science at Our Lady of Grace School, and finally was a researcher for World Book Encyclopedia. Frances will be remembered for her sharp intellect and critical thinking, as well as her jiao zi. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends, sewing, all-you-can-eat buffets, and was a long-time fan of General Hospital. Frances is survived by her daughter Josepha (Alexander), son Albert (Julie), granddaughter Natalie, brother Li Xi Cheng, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John, her brothers Li Dong Ying and Li Bei Hai, her brother-in-law Rev. John B. Fu, and many of her dear friends.
