We sadly announce Frances Marian (Kinney) Hand, age 97, passed away on October 4, 2025, in Columbus, Ohio. Born on June 23, 1928, in Monmouth, Illinois, Marian was the daughter of Frank and Esther (Brownlee) Kinney. She was raised on the family's Sesquicentennial Farm in Little York, where her solid values of love of family, hard work, and life's enjoyment took root.
Marian's early education began at Duck Creek School and continued through her graduation from Little York High School with the Class of 1946. She pursued higher education with determination and purpose, attending Monmouth College for two years before earning her nursing degree from the University of Iowa College of Nursing in 1952. While at the university she met and married an athletic city boy from Chicago, George Wilson Hand, jr. For the next 57 years they navigated life's challenges and rewards together raising their four children, working in their careers, traveling around the country, visiting family and friends. Marian was always a happy companion enjoying the journey regardless of the destination.
The highlight of Marian's nursing career spanned over three decades at Ohio State University Hospitals where she worked on the challenging Renal Medicine/Transplant unit. Marian was a dedicated, caring bedside nurse offering kindness and comfort on the evening shift with a warm touch or quiet gesture that said, "I'm here".
Marian loved to sew, she fashioned many of her daughters' frocks, created hundreds of Pooh bears for Children's Charity, and provided window dressings for her and her families
homes with the trusted Singer sewing machine. She also appreciated crafts including furniture refinishing, knitting, and creating beautiful, beaded Christmas ornaments. In addition to the indoor activities, Marian's garden offered many hours of fulfillment and sheer enjoyment.
Marians' hands were rarely idle
Marian is survived by her four children: daughters Karen (Roddy) Hanahan, Laura (Marty) Hess, Martha (Tim) Amerson; and son Michael Hand. She also leaves behind five grandchildren: Andrew Hess, Marian Kyle Mott, Elizabeth Ricevuto, Madeline Hess, and Alex Hand; three great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews who were a cherished part of her life; and her beloved little sister Melba (Bill) Rogoway.
She was preceded in death by her husband George Hand; her parents Frank and Esther Kinney; sister Ruth Kinney; and brothers Gerald Kinney, Howard Kinney, and Harold Kinney.
Her legacy lives on not only through the family she nurtured but also through the enduring friendships she cultivated throughout every stage of life. The close ties she maintained are a reflection of the time and love she so freely gave unconditionally. In her memory, practice kindness and take a friend to lunch.
In lieu of flowers Marian would appreciate donations to a Breast Cancer Charity, The Michael J Fox Foundation or charity of your choice.
Friends may call Friday, October 10 from 10-11am at St. Timothy Church, 1088 Thomas Lane where a Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00am. A private burial will be held at a later date.
