Francis DeBella Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Windsor Locks Funeral Home on May 30, 2025.
Francis Joseph DeBella, 76, of Windsor Locks, beloved husband of Maryann (Sirotnak) DeBella, passed away at home on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.
Born in Springfield, MA on June 19, 1948, he was the proud son of Italian immigrants, the late Frank and Enis DeBella. Francis carried his Italian heritage with deep pride throughout his life. A lifelong resident of Windsor Locks, Francis was a man devoted to his family, his community, and his calling. His sense of duty and work ethic were formed early, working as a young man at Reilly's Gas Station in Windsor Locks where he made lifelong friendships that propelled him into his calling as a firefighter. He served as a Hartford Firefighter for 38 years, earning the respect of his brothers and sisters in the department as a "firefighter's firefighter." Francis took great pride and joy doing all his years at Engine 14/Ladder 4 in Hartford. His dedication extended beyond his career - he also volunteered with the Windsor Locks Fire Department for 55 years, serving as Assistant Chief and leaving a lasting legacy of service and leadership.
Francis had many passions in life. He was a diehard fan of the New York Yankees and Notre Dame football, rarely missing games. Francis loved tending to his vegetable garden, and took great pride in his classic Model A car. He found joy in simple things -good food, digging in the dirt, and spending time with friends. He was a member of the Suffield Sportsmen's Club, the Mount Carmel Italian Society in Enfield, and the Moose Lodge.
Most of all, Francis was a devoted family man. He loved deeply and completely, never hesitating to lend a hand or offer advice (whether you asked for it or not). His legacy is one of strength, loyalty, and love-passed down to his children, grandchildren, and every firefighter who was lucky enough to serve alongside him. Francis lived by the words he often shared with those around him "You have to hit what is pitched." It was more than a saying -it was a way of life. Through every high and low, he met life head-on with laughter, courage, resilience and heart. We will do our best to live that attitude every day, carrying his strength and spirit forward. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Maryann DeBella of Windsor Locks; his daughter, Kristen DeBella of Windsor Locks; his son, Michael DeBella and his wife Loren, of Windsor Locks; and two precious granddaughters, Giuliana "Gigi" DeBella and Melina DeBella, who were the light of his life. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-laws John Sirotnak and wife Lee, and Sister Mary Catherine Sirotnak; his special goddaughter, Diane Kay; several nieces and nephews; and dear friends Cathy and Timmy Jeffery. He was predeceased by his sister, Gail Beuchert, and his best friend, Kenneth Jeffery.
Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Thursday, June 5, from 4–7 p.m. at Windsor Locks Funeral Home, 441 Spring St., Windsor Locks. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 6, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Church, 42 Spring St., Windsor Locks. Please meet directly at the church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Windsor Locks.
