Columbia - Funeral services for Francis Sidney "Frank" Dunn will be held at Shandon United Methodist Church, 3407 Devine St, Columbia, SC 29205 on Sunday, May 26, 2024 at 3:00 PM with Reverend C. E. "Smoke" Kanipe officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 25, 2024 from 5:00PM until 6:00PM at Thompson Funeral Home at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC 29209. The burial will be held on Friday, May 31, 2024 at 1:00PM with full military honors, at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
Mr. Dunn was born in Conway, SC on July 8, 1932 to Loney Calvo Dunn and Mary Ettie Causey Dunn and died May 14, 2024. He was named in honor of his grandmothers: Mary Frances Brock Causey and Josephine Sidney Patrick Dunn.
Frank graduated from Conway High School in 1951. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1953 and completed 35 years military service, including the SC Air National Guard. During military service he was deployed to Alaska, Hawaii, Panama, Spain, England, and Norway. He retired as a Senior Master Sergeant and promoted to Chief Master Sergeant in Retired Reserve.
His Service includes: USAF 1953-1957, USAF 1961-1962 (Berlin Crisis), and S.C. Air National Guard 1957-1987.
Awards and decorations include: USAF Commendation; The Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, with one bronze leaf cluster; The Good Conduct Medal; The National Defense Service Medal, The Air Force Overseas Medal; The Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon, with one silver oak leaf cluster and two bronze oak leaf clusters; The Air Reserve Forces Meritorious Service Medal, with one silver oak leaf cluster and one bronze oak leaf cluster; The Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon The Air Force Training Ribbon; The Exceptional Service Medal; The Armed Forces Reserve, with two hourglass device, and The Active State Service Medal, 30 years.
He has been a member of Shandon United Methodist Church for over 50 years where he served as a church greeter, usher, the Administration Board and JOY Sunday school class member. He is a member of the US Air Force Association and SC National Guard Association. Following retirement, he owned Dunn Distributing Company for several years. He loved sports (especially Clemson University football where he was an IPTAY member for over 50 years). He enjoyed fishing and short one day trips.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys Irene Ringer Dunn who he married on February 21, 1958; one daughter, Kelley Dunn; and two granddaughters, Devyn Ala-Grace Rankin and Brooklyn Ana Crance. He is also survived by one brother, Elwyn H. Dunn of Surfside Beach, SC, as well as a number of special nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; sister, Eugenia Dunn Belton; brothers, Rev. Charles L. Dunn and Jessel V. Dunn.
