Francis Mulroy Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Gardner Funeral Home, Runnemede on Mar. 7, 2026.
Francis M. Mulroy, age 91, passed away peacefully at his home on March 2, 2026 surrounded by family. Born on October 25, 1934, he was raised on Vine Street in North Camden, where he embodied the faith, hard work and loyalty of his family and community.

A proud first-generation Irish American, Fran was the beloved son of the late Margaret (nee Dooley) of Tulla, County Clare and Bernard Mulroy of Salterstown, County Louth. He was preceded in death by his siblings John, Mary, Bernie, and Tom, to whom he was deeply devoted.

Fran later made his home in Sea Isle City and was formerly a longtime resident of Bellmawr. He was the devoted husband of Patricia M. Mulroy (nee Cleaver), with whom he shared a loving 63-year marriage and a life centered on family, teaching, and coaching basketball.

He was a proud and loving father to his children: Francis (Kathy), Bernard, Thomas, Mary (Herb), and Sean (Ovgu). Nothing brought him greater joy than his grandchildren - Sean, Hunter, Kyle, Shannon, Simon, and Beatrice - who were a constant source of pride and happiness.

An exceptional athlete, Fran was a standout basketball player at Camden Catholic High School. His talent and leadership carried him to the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated from the Wharton School of Business and co-captained the Penn basketball team during the 1955-1956 seasons.

Following college, Fran proudly served his country as an officer in the United States Navy from 1956-1958, serving at the Washington Navy Yard and often playing pick-up basketball at the Pentagon during lunch breaks.

Education became his life's calling. He dedicated nearly four decades to teaching, spending ten years at Camden Catholic High School and twenty-nine years at Haddon Township High School, where his teaching skill and humor influenced generations of students. His passion for athletics continued through coaching boys' basketball at Camden Catholic and Haddon Township. Later in his career, he coached the Haddon Township girls' team to a state championship victory.

Fran Mulroy will be remembered as a devoted husband and father, a proud grandfather, an educator, a coach, a veteran, and a man of integrity, humor and compassion. His legacy lives on through the thousands of students he mentored, the hundreds of athletes he coached and the family he supported, encouraged, and loved. He is irreplaceable and will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
