Francisco N. Bento, 101, of New Bedford, passed away on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at the Oaks. Born in Horta, Faial, Azores, Portugal, he was the son of the late Manuel Bento and the late Anna (Noia) Bento and loving husband to the late Laura "Laurinha" (Silveira) Bento.
Francisco was a long time textile printer and landscaper, holding various positions including Brittany Clothing, Duro Textile and Rebello Nursery. He was a social gentleman who loved spending time with others and sharing stories. For many years he raised animals on the family farm, including rabbits, pigs, chickens, goats, and pigeons. Allowing him to meet many people as his livestock provided meals for them. He took great pride in caring for them and in the life he built at home. He also loved working outdoors. Gardening and landscaping brought him happiness, and he enjoyed keeping his yard and land looking beautiful. In his free time, Francisco liked watching boxing and soccer, always following the matches with interest. Later in life, he took up fishing, finding peace by the water. One of his daily routines was walking through Pine Grove Cemetery, a place where he enjoyed the quiet and reflection.
He is survived by his daughter Marie Lilia "Lily" Bento-DaRosa of New Bedford; grandson, Zachary Louis DaRosa and his significant other Rita Ann Boutaugh; great granddaughter Andreia Angelina DaRosa and step great granddaughter, Constance Elizabeth Boutaugh. Francisco is preceded in death by his brother, Antonio Bento.
All are invited to join Francisco's Mass of Christian Burial to be held at St. Mary's Church in Fairhaven on Saturday, March 14th at 10am. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Francisco's name to a charity of your choosing.
